1. Are all roguelikes dungeon crawlers? Are there any that involve procedurally outdoor areas, towns, etc. in addition to dungeons?
2. Do they all use ASCII graphics? I'm no graphics whore by any means - my graphical wheelhouse is the 8/16-bit eras but ASCII... using keyboard symbols and letters is too much for me.
Great thread!
1. There are usually stores etc. FTL doesn't have any dungeons.
2. Nope. Again, look at modern ones such as FTL and Dungeons of Dredmor.

There's at least 1 ASCII roguelike I played once that had an overworld and various dungeons, but I can't remember the name.

I prefer Graphical Roguelikes myself. My favorites are Ragnarok (DOS) and Elona, There's an impressive isometric graphical interface for Nethack called Vulture's Eye. I spent a lot of hours playing Reaping the Dungeon (Dungeon Rogue) and Castle of the Winds back in the day, but I don't know how relevant they are anymore...
