PS2 V12 Laser?

I've read (and been told) that the V12 PS2 Laser is crap. Well, what exactly is wrong with it? Does it happen to all V12 Lasers? Is it fixable?

I had a v12 and when using a mod-chip it would burn out every couple of months. Had to add a resistor fix and then all was good.
