I am a big Tolkein nerd. I admit it freely to anyone who asks.
But I will make another confession: I like The Hobbit more than LoTR itself overall.
Now there have been lots of LoTR games but they are all set in the in the Middle-Earth of the Trilogy. I liked the Middle-Earth of The Hobbit, a somewhat different place, much more. I wish there were a game set in that Middle-Earth...
I tell you all of this because I would love to play a game (RPG, ARPG, or Action/Advenure[Zelda-style I guess]) that captures the feel of that book - and I can't figure out what that would be.
I did play The Hobbit (PS2/GCN/etc) back in the day but there was something missing. I think the game that has come the closest for me was A Link to the Past. To me that game really captures the feeling of wonder and discovery that I get reading The Hobbit.
I suppose I could play it again but.... What else is out there that might fit this (admittedly) vague criteria? Any other fans of The Hobbit out there that have looked to get their fix by proxy from a game?
Thanks.

Re: Looing for a Game....
The GBA version of The Hobbit sounds like what you are looking for...I have not played it, but IGN says that it is pretty good:

I think the Ys games (especially the first few) have a great medieval swords and sorcery feel. The towns, dungeons, and ruins in the games give me the same kinda "feel" I get from The Hobbit.

Any specific recommendations on which games/platforms of the Ys series I should check out?BoneSnapDeez wrote:

Re: Looking for a Game....
Since you have a 3DS I would recommend starting with Legacy of Ys: Books I & II, which contains ports of the first two Ys games.
Re: Looking for a Game....
Another one to check out might be "Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun" for Genesis. Just be aware that you'll pretty much definitely have to find a way to get a fresh battery in the cart to save your game.
It's based on "basic"/non-Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and I really liked the overall atmosphere. I can't say it's super-Hobbitty, but you might like it.
I'd second the recommendation for the Ys games too. I've only played the first one, but it's great.

I'd check out Shining Wisdom for the Saturn if I were you. It sounds like it might be what you are looking for.

Excellent pick!Nemoide wrote:"Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun"
Aren't the "halflings" in the game kinda Hobbit-like too?

That is a quality port. I playedthrough it recently, and both of those games have aged quite well. Highly recommended.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Since you have a 3DS I would recommend starting with Legacy of Ys: Books I & II, which contains ports of the first two Ys games.

With a movie of The Hobbit on the way, I'm sure there will be a videogame set in that Middle Earth soon.
