Breetai wrote: I don't think the level design Sonic CD should be directly compared to the cartridge Sonic games at this point. Back in 1993, sure, of if you are comparing in general, but it seems we are going into finer points here. Sonic CD took an entirely different approach to level design. A mainly different (but not entirely) team designed Sonic CD, and it focuses much more on level exploration than the cart games do. It does take away from some of the speed that you think of on the other games, and I love it, but I don't think it's fair to say it's a better design or not when it was intended to be different. It's more of a polarizing thing, where you either like the style more or you don't.
I was talking more about the game play&level design flow in the fast parts and how well the precision platforming parts were done.
Breetai wrote: Mystic Cave has a couple of nearly game breaking parts, where there are pits than you can get stuck in and MUST wait out the 10 minute timer before you die! Hardly flawless!!!
I can only think of one, and that one has spikes at the bottom. It's the only poorly designed pit (no escape) in the whole trilogy that I remember.

I personally always quit playing Sonic 2 at the end of Metropolis Zone 3

Then clearly it isn't flawless for you. :D

Yes about Mario World (and 3), but do S3&K and Ninja Gaiden II first. S3&K just to play the rest of the Genesis saga. then Ninja Gaiden II for some variety. Then hit up Mario 3 or World. Since you have a TG-CD set-up of some sort, DO look into YsI&II eventually. Nice picks on your four TG/PCE games, though!!!!! That's quality stuff, although I haven't played Dungeon Explorer II, I do love the first one. Also strongly consider getting at least Blazing Lazers for a vertical shoot 'em up on the TG/PCE. It's cheap to boot.

Since Dishonored is all the rage at the moment, you really should look into LG games again, espescially now that there's a new patch for Thief 2 and System Shock 2. The original System Shock, while truly groundbreaking and extraordinarily influental, is kind of outdated, but you might as well try some Ultima Online while you're at if, if you can over come your fear of oldschool RPGs :P While the game doesn't have much of a plot (Ultima IV-VI trilogy is one to look into if you want to see some old RPGs with extraordinarily good and more importantly thought provoking storylines), it's better than most grindy old RPGs for the simple fact that it acts as a survival simulator also. It's also really immersive and has a lot of depth for a game that old. Also a tremendously influental and under-rated game like all the others I just listed.

Seems to kind of weird to me to get a console as pricy as TG-CD just to play a few games, even if he does prefer to have a small collection

The level design and solid precision platforming makes up for one mistake, when the alternative with less intresting platforming that go on for too long

I believe the pit you're talking about actually has spikes in it. So while you don't die right away, you might have to take a few hits until all the rings bounce away. It is a pain if you're super sonic at that point though, then you do have to wait it out, but not 10 minutes.

Sonic 2 was the first videogame I ever owned, but I still prefer Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It has some overlong levels (sandopolis and arrrrgh, carnival night) but overall it's way more polished than the first two games. It's got the cool level transitions, and way more high speed areas than either of the first games. Plus it added mid-bosses, and even the main bosses were more interesting.

I am not very picky. For all systems I memorize all rare titles just about and look for interesting ones. Heck the main thing I want is more Kirby, Earthbound, and like all Saturn gams I find in the wild once I get one, unless it's a rpg then I'm getting it anyways.

Remember guys that I still don't own most of that list, it's just what I want to own right now, I still don't have a TG16 or an American NES, just the crappy European one so I still have a long way to go.

In fact, by the time I get a third of the games I will probably add many of the now rejects because I have already beaten most of my current list. So I'll look into Ghosts'n Goblins, Ice Climbers or Ninja Gaiden

Oh, it IS weird. But I may get one from a friend so it's listed there. Otherwise I would be much stick to the painful world of emulation

I still haven't played either to be frank but given that I love Gauntlet, it seemed like something to look into. I was told that II was better than I so I just listed that one.

I probably will. Right now it's probably going to kick Lords of Thunder out, mainly because it isn't expensive as fuck

You know, I have never liked Super Mario World, it always felt like it was missing something, the rocket fuel, so as to speak. I think I played it too much before that

It reminds me of SMB3, which I also didn't like. I don't even know why!

Oh, I guess I am, though PC games covering four generations of consoles probably has something to do with it!

My arcade favourites list must have more games than all other platforms together, though.

Your collection is pretty rounded, it's cool. So many unpalyed games! Though I can understand why you haven't beaten R-Type.

Seems you don't like strategy games, how come? :)
I didn't realize the thread has moved, so sorry for late response.

The last few months I've been buying games up like a mad-man because we had an official (and HUGE) Goodwill store open up in our area and I've been getting games for $2-$5 a piece. Plus the recent clearance on PS2 games at Gamestop has had me getting PS2 games for even cheaper than Goodwill. So my backlog of unplayed games has grown enormously. I'm fine with that, because I bought them for dirt-cheap and I'll have plenty of games to keep me busy for a while.

I don't like strategy games simply because they're too slow-moving for me. Same reason I barely have any JRPGs in my collection, too.

So there IS someone out there who dislikes SMB3. (Or at least, someone who actually likes good platformers in general who dislikes it.)

Lords of Thunder is around the same price, or slightly more, than a regular new PS3 or 360 game. It's better than most PS3 or 360 games to boot. Do you consider that to be "expensive as fuck"?

There are four pricier TG-CD games that everyone with a Super CD unit needs to get, IMO. Those are Ys I&II, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder (aka. Winds of Thunder) and Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (Castlevania X).

Regular PS3/360 game on average has a lot more content, so you get a lot more bang for your buck. New games, like new cars, houses, furniture and so on are always "overpriced" when compared to the second hand market prices.
