It's a very well done game, but also very derivative with regard to gameplay. Main thing I straight dislike with it is the use of quicktime events to finish off bosses, but that's not too uncommon in the genre these days.
Either way, if you like the general GoW/DMC/etc model, you could do a lot worse.

In terms of story, it's a reboot, so prior knowledge of the series is unnecessary.

Just started playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Wii VC) again. I had stopped playing it for about 8 months. The one thing I noticed is the adjustment to getting used to the controls again. Currently making my way through the Water Temple.

It's basically God of War+Shadow of the Colossus+Tomb Raider+creatures that look like something out of Lord of the Rings. The only original thing in the game is the magic system and how it affects combat. It's a good game, but it's also sad in that it really shows that Castlevania has no real identity any more. Just like all the other big Japanese franchises (Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, etc.)Castlevania is really struggling to find itself in this new generation of gaming that is so very anti-Japanese.

I disagree with this sentiment (the sentiment that LoS doesn't have an identity.) It felt a lot like Castlevania to me and the way they did the level design is kind of brilliant IMO, it felt the most like a 3D-adaptation of a 2D-level I've ever experienced. Add that to a well-acted, interesting origin story and you have me eagerly anticipating Lords of Shadow 2.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Fast question: In the NES Castlevanias, do you jump with the left or right button?

For most NES games, B is the attack button and A is the jump/activate/use item button. There are a few oddballs though. Gradius is an early release where A shoots and B activates the power up, but it was switched for Life Force.

I'm really enjoying the new XCOM. Yeah it's not the same as the old one, but, it's still a hell of a lot of fun and is itching my strategy itch quite nicely. Playing on Classic difficulty with Ironman is proving just as punishing as it should be, while still being very rewarding.
