I'd advise before spending any more money though that you wait to see if anyone else has anymore advise. I'm not sure how to get a PAL system working on an American TV, but perhaps someone else might know.

Well it's more likely for American HDTVs to accept normal PAL50 composite than CRTs. Assuming that is what your console is trying to display. Possible someone botched a color fix to NTSC.

Yeah he'll have to check his TV's compatibility then. Some HD sets refuse to accept low res from component

Hmm, wasn't aware. Mine doesn't mind my PS2's lowly 480i component input at all.

480i component is OK.

It's below 480i, like most PS1 games, that can be an issue.

I traded in my composite cable for a SCART cable. Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent SCART to Component converter?

I checked the specifications for my TV and it doesn't say anything about support, but I want to try it anyway.

Wii in 480i mode will display most virtual console games (except N64) in 240p, so if you have component cables for wii that's a quick way to check.

Alternatively, try out a few Ps1 games in a Ps2 that's hooked up via component.

The second one isn't possible. You can't boot a PS1 game using component cables at all, it just isn't allowed for some reason. At least that's what I've been told. Let me try for you, real fast.

*Edit* Well, I was dead wrong. Not sure where I heard it wasn't allowed by the PS2, but it sure is. 100% confirmed with Vigilante 8 2nd Offense, and Spyro the Dragon. There is a bit of weirdness (FMV's and logos seem to want to display in 480i, while the actual game wants 240p) resulting in my TV changing display modes somewhat frequently, but wow. The PS1 games actually benefited btw, and were a minor bit sharper. Nice.

I borrowed a friends big brick of a PS2 and hooked it up via component cable to my TV. I tested these PS1 games: Valkyrie Profile, Einhander, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears. Everything booted up nice and clear.

Einhander is a great game. Sat down and played it for a while.

I was about to ask where on earth you heard that one, because I've played plenty of ps1 games on my ps2 via component.

It must have been on a board somewhere or something. Probably someone's TV not being compatible with 240p under component is my guess. It's funny because I never used my PS2 to play PS1 games because I was too lazy to swap component with composite, so I just had the actual system hooked up all the time. I'm not going to change it (I love the old school nature of the original playstation with its flippy top and noises), but at least if it dies I won't be inconvenienced.
