I much, much preferred the way Banjo Tooie did it: any notes you collect stay collected. The reset method makes it feel like I've basically made zero progress until I 100% the level.ZeroAX wrote:That was a very questionable game mechanic indeed. But I don't know if I would want the game to only force me to collect the ones I hadn't collected before, or for the number of notes per level to be reduced but the "best score" mechanic to stay. Cause while time consuming (specially if you die) it was still very interesting to try and collect all the notes on one go.AppleQueso wrote: The only thing I found REALLY grating in Banjo (Kazooie at least) was the note doors. They're based on your total scores from each stage, so if you're short by only a handful, you have to go back to a previous stage and collect every single note you collected the first time along with the ones you're missing.
DK64 kicked the collectables into flat out absurd territory.

I know it's frustrating, but I don't know...I kind of enjoyed collecting all of them and having to start from the beginning if I fail. It's part of the challenge. It probably helps that I enjoyed the game so much thoughBoringSupreez wrote: I much, much preferred the way Banjo Tooie did it: any notes you collect stay collected. God I grew to despise rare. Their games were barely platformers. They were barely games. It was sort of like spending an evening searching for your keys.

This thread kind of cracks me up, collectibles are the thing in adventure/platformers.

Hell yes I would love to see this happen. I've been playing through Banjo-Tooie all the way for the first time and it really makes me sad to think that the next big game that Banjo was in after this was Nuts & Bolts. :/

While I personally don't mind collecting things to progress, this isn't really an even comparison. Loot is rewarding because it either directly or indirectly advances your character(s) abilities to handle the challenges the game presents. Collecting items in Rare games was generally just to advance the game outright, even the abilities you got were just given to you so that you could interact with specific obstacles.jfrost wrote:

Besides, most games with "loot" are more randomized. The BK games and DK64 were nothing of the sort.

Maybe, but you do still have to collect loot to advancel. Maybe not specific bits of loot, but you do need better items to go on. But I understand what you mean. I just don't think the difference is as pronounced.
Maybe if all the trinkets in the Rare games were put to some use besides unlocking a door or something people wouldn't rage so much.
