Hellraiser Inferno

I wanted to make it a point to start catching up on the Hellraiser movies we've missed. We had seen the first four until now. So here's the fifth film. It's also the first to be direct-to-video. And I'm guessing the first to be a movie that had nothing to do with Hellraiser when the script was first written. Instead it's basically a pretty generic psychological thriller with some Cenobites thrown in.

When I say generic, I mean it. The characters are so stereotypical. IE: Main character is a crooked cop who is absolutely every crappy detective cliche you've ever seen in a 90's movie. His partner is the good cop. And so on. And really it's like an 85 minute pointless thriller with a few mins of cool Cenobite footage. I'll give it that -- the Cenobites look badass in this one. But yeah. Pretty dumb.

And the ending:
Oh, it was all a dream! Phew... Oh. But now the dream is starting to come true.
...lame.

So I do believe I have a new standard for haunted house movies after seeing this one. Why is this film not talked about more? Its effects are creepy and incredible. The evil wheelchair, the returning ball, the noises, the apparitions... Awesome! There's no doubt that this house is haunted from the very beginning, and George C. Scott does a superb job interacting with the haunting. I can't wait to compare this one to The Amityville Horror!

I'm hesitant to do so. I've read Richard Matheson's novel Hell House, the book the film is based on, but I was not impressed. It just felt like a trashy 70s exploitation attempt on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. So I've been reluctant to watch the movie.

Trust me, the movie is absolutely terrifying.

Ack I just watched The Changeling a couple weeks ago for the first time in years. I had forgotten how great it was. Glad you enjoyed it.

Are there any movies that still scare you guys? Not trying to play quien es mas macho, but I'm trying to think of a movie that would keep me up at night in fear, and I'm coming up blank.

I remember going camping after seeing the first Blair Witch Project in the theater and waking up startled if I heard a twig snap. Since then, nothing has given me the feeling of someone lurking in the shadows. I love the horror genre, but it's been since 1999 since a movie really got to me.

edit* Halloween, not movie related. I forgot I had this in my record collection. This should help scare the shit out of trick-n-treaters.

The Changeling is one of my very favorite horror films, and I am glad that you enjoyed. The Amityville Horror...
absolutely sucks. I know that it was a big hit when it was released, but man that movie sucks. The characters are ridiculous, it is not the least bit scary, and - worst of all - it is incredibly dull. It The Changeling is the gold standard for horror films, then The Amityville Horror is the "brown" standard.
In any event, my wife and I just watched:

The Last Exorcism (2010) - I really, really liked it, and it is one of the best horror films that I have seen this month. It was quite scary, and it is definitely one of the best "found footage" horror movies that I have ever seen. The female lead gives an incredible performance that easily tops Linda Blair's performance in The Exorcist. My only two complaints about the film are: (1) although the movie is set in Louisiana - and was clearly shot in Louisiana - none of the characters had Louisiana (or even Southern) accents; and (2)
the ending. I think that the audience expects a big, final pay off in movies like this; so, I understand why it ends the way that it does. I think, however, that leaving the ending open (i.e., was she really possessed or simply disturbed?) would have resulted in a much stronger film.
That said, I still enjoyed the movie thoroughly - and it scared the bejesus out of my wife. It is also available for instant streaming; so, if you have Netflix, I would recommend watching it this month.

Why does everyone bitch about the ending in The Last Exorcism? I liked it a lot (Specially if you compare it to the anal leakage that is The Devil Inside).

Also, the sequel is being made as a hard-R movie which is a pretty good sign. I mean, I have nothing against PG-13 horror when it's done well like in Insidious, The Last Exorcism or even The Legend Of Hell House but it's always better to shoot a horror film with the option of having gore, profanity or sexual content. Even a shitty movie like Shark Night 3D could have used that and it could have become a cult classic.
