Is that the one by Cronenberg and the one that stars Marilyn Chambers (The famous 70's porn star better know for her performance in the extremely artsy Behind The Green Door)?

yeah, weird casting choice in that one. He originally wanted sissy spacek, but when couldn't get her, went with a porn star instead.

I don't think that's entirely bad. Look at The Girlfriend Experience, I had never heard of Sasha Grey before watching that movie and turns out... she's pretty good in it and she proves that porn stars CAN act.

Per the recommendation that I look into this one, I watched Dementia 13 this morning. I would have watched a horror film last night, but the umpire call last night during the 8th inning of the Braves game was terrifying enough.

So anyway, Dementia 13 is a Roger Corman film written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It's a Psycho-wannabe, and unfortunately the plot gets a bit muddled. And the doctor is an asshole, no matter how I think about it. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, there's some interesting axe murder scenes which make it an early but still entertaining slasher flick. It's nowhere near as good as Psycho, but the finding of a corpse in a meat locker and the sudden beheading of one of the minor characters stood out to me. But my absolute favorite sequence in the film has to be when the murderer demolishes a shed with his axe while the family matriarch screams inside of it and then flees from the collapsing structure. It reminded me of the unstoppable power that slasher villains now regularly exhibit in the genre.

I love Dementia 13...and - according to the book "Danse Macabre" - it is also one of Stephen King's favorite horror films.

EDIT: I am also glad that you are trying out some of my "public domain" horror recommendations. There are some really good public domain horror films out there.

so Wes Craven is probably my favorite director. But you should realize the distinction between "favorite" and "best." I don't think he's the best director, by a longshot. But his movies are super entertaining to me. What I think I love so much is that many of his films feel like they're basically b-movies on a big budget.

My Soul To Take is a really weird and interesting title in his filmography -- especially in the last decade. It came after Red Eye (which was more a TV-movie feeling thriller) and before Scream 4 (which was absolutely incredible). But this feels like a warm-up for Scre4m. It's like he needed to test the waters of how to make another slasher.

Unlike Scre4m, this isn't self-aware. It's not fun either. It's dark. And the characters are unbelievable. The dialogue is bad. The interaction between characters is stiff. And yet, I really like it. But I love a good train-wreck. This film feels like I'm not even sure why it was made. It feels a bit unsure of itself. But that is exactly what I like. It's a movie in search of its own identity. At moments grim and disturbing, at others silly and hard to believe. But there's some great ideas in here, though admittedly a lot of them feel like older Craven films (Shocker, Scream, NOES, etc) thrown in a blender.

A lot of people hated this one. But I don't. I don't love it either, but I enjoy it as a bizarre transitional film that brought Craven back to his prime with Scream 4. I can't say you'll love it... but if you're a fan of Craven's work, including his missteps like I am, then you should certainly see it.

I forgot all about My Soul to Take. I'll have to watch that soon. Hated Red Eye, but also loved Scream 4 - which I don't think was entirely due to me being an extra on set.

Noise, you ever watch his non-horror flick - Music of the Heart? Sounds pretty generic, and not something I'd have any interest in, if his name weren't attached. But because it is, the flick's been on "to watch" list for quite some time now.

yeah Music Of The Heart is good. Well written, directed and Streep is great in it.

I've seen *almost* everything he's done, minus his early porn film Together and a couple made for TV films that are super hard to find now like the Disney one Casebusters. There's also Chameleon Blue which I'm still not 100% sure how much involvement he had. That said, yes, basically everything he's had any major hand in (being writing or directing) I've seen many many times.

EDIT: I didn't hate Red Eye, but it's kind of boring and well... lacking personality. That said, I fucking loved Cursed and apparently that's a pretty hated film. So whatever.

I did see his porno, it sucked ass (Not literally but still  ). And yes, I loved My Soul To Take and Cursed.

Red Eye is pretty awesome too IMHO.
