Yeah, you totally missed the announcement they made a month later or so after the FPS was announced that they were also making a real X-COM game with Firaxis as the dev. Everyone was like "all is forgiven! You can make the FPS as a spinoff and we're getting our real game".

So finally got to play it for some time and i have great news! the game is excellent! i had my reservations about the changes but everything feels just about right, and while it may not be exactly the old xcom, they still manage to keep the overall feel of the older xcom games. I'm playing normal and i do notice that it is slightly easier (yet sill challenging thankfully), but I'm sure if i bumped up the difficulty to classic mode i wouldn't be saying that at all. Also the beginning of the game for the first time holds your hand in teaching you things (for about the first 30mins to an hour), but i tested out a new game and the tutorial can be shut off and you can be left to you own devices from the get-go.

I just reached the point where I stop getting constant tutorials. I'm playing ironman classic mode and having a blast. I've got a Corporal Sniper who's special ability is the ability to fire at any alien a friendly unit has vision on (and you have LOS). It lets me keep her out of danger and make some nice long range shots.

yeah a few of my snipers had the option for that but i chose the ability to shoot after moving.

I'm planning on restarting when I get home tonight and finish my Dishonored for the night, but this time without the tutorial. Now that I know what I'm doing I feel like I can make better choices than what's forced on me.

I didn't even bother with the tutorial. After about 30 minutes, I said f-it and restarted in Classic mode with Ironman on.

I wasn't expecting the tutorial to be quite as involved as it was. I was figuring it'd do something like "here's your first mission, here's how you move and shoot, now here's a quick overview of the base facilities, good luck!" But it walks you through much more than that.

yeah it is extensive, but i feel that it helps with the over all game. i know the original xcom didn't tell you shit, unless you read the manual which actually shows you a bit, but it's nice to know what everything does for the most part.

So I'm going to restart again, as I just lost two countries during the second month's review. Also, it turns out that engineers are the precious resource, with scientists being secondary. Scientists affect research speed, while engineers have hard numbers of "you must have X to build this". In the original you could get by with a handful of engineers because projects took up shop space and if you had a good system setup you could just spend a few months shooting down aliens without following up.

I am loving this so far. Got destroyed my first run through using the tutorial on normal difficult. I am on normal again with the tutorial turned off and I am fairly deep into the game. All panic levels low, and have only lost 2 soldiers so far.

I can't get enough of the game at the moment.
