How's the Blood Bag edition? I still own the original standard case release and I've heard the Blu-Ray is horrendous so I'd rather get the cool blood bag package  .

I used to own the standard case release, but if I remember correctly, it was the edited North America release, while the Blood Bag edition is completely unedited. So more gore, more sexuality, more violence. It's worth checking out, despite the "blood" eventually drying up in the bag.

This'll be my last write-up for a couple weeks since I'll be going on vacation tomorrow.

April Fool's Day

I can honestly say that this is the first time I've gotten to the end of a movie like this and thought to myself, "That was cute", without any hint of sarcasm.

I really wouldn't call this a horror movie, though. It's got a few decent scares, but it's less of a horror and more a mystery-thriller. The first 2/3rds are more of a who-dun-it, without the gore, while the very beginning and the last 3rd is treated more like a traditional slasher. Oh, so the stupid kids think it'll be fun to be a bunch of pranksters, huh?

Not so fun anymore, is it?

Just about everything in this movie is over the top: The acting, the comedy, the story, the ending. This is very much a B-movie, but it's a B-movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. And while the comedy mostly revolved around standard April Fool's day pranks, I found some of them pretty elaborate and amusing (The light trick made me giggle.)

The acting is also typical B-movie fare and leaves much to be desired. Deborah Foreman, who plays the host for the weekend does a decent job, but the rest of the performances range from the previously stated over-the-top to meh.

I felt the Texan in particular needed to be reigned in a little.

Still, it was a fun little movie and it left me wishing I'd seen it sooner. It's kind of like a satire on 80's slasher films. Not on the same level of satire and meta as Scream, of course, but very reminiscent of it in a way and filled with more physical comedy. Kind of like a weird mash-up of Scream and Clue. Or better yet, try to imagine what a slasher would be like if it was written by Danilo Bach, the same guy who wrote Beverly Hills Cop. Now if you can watch it without being disappointed at the lack of Eddie Murphy, then you'll be in for a fun little ride.

Cheers!

So Jennifer Connelly can telepathically control insects and must use them to track down a spear-wielding murderer at her all female boarding school...except that the staff there think she's suffering from schizophrenia. Also, there's a monkey with a straight razor. I can definitely see how the film influenced the Clock Tower games, in particular the first one, but I really want to know how this film came into being, because it's nothing short of bizarre!

bizarre how?

Oh. Right.
Not one of my favorite Argento films. But it's cool. And like you mentioned, one of the reasons I initially looked into the Clock Tower series to begin with.

...

@Michi: April Fool's Day is great fun. Though the ending... meh.

@Michi: April Fool's Day is great fun. Though the ending...yay!

My wife and I both thought that the movie - while not particularly scary - was a lot of fun.

have you (and Michi) seen Happy Birthday To Me? I tend to lump that in with April Fool's Day and My Bloody Valentine. I guess because they're all Canadian slashers? It's something not often brought up, but there was this whole little awesome Canadian slasher scene in the 80's.

I have seen My Bloody Valentine - which is also a lot of fun - but not Happy Birthday to Me. In any event, in honor of the incredibly esoteric film sub-genre we just invented, I will start a list:

Fun Canadian Slasher Films from the 1980s
April Fool's Day
Happy Birthday to Me
My Bloody Valentine

Are there any others? (Also, I just noticed that all of these movies relate to special occasions (April Fool's Day, a birthday, Valentine's Day). Is that true for any other movies in our new sub-genre?

EDIT: It is! Prom Night (1980)!!!

...not a slasher, nor from the 70s or 80s... but OMG I heart Ginger Snaps.

^Katherine Isabel is one of my favorite scream queens of recent years.

I have been meaning to watch Ginger Snaps...but my wife thinks that the title is a ridiculous pun, and she has resisted my efforts to date. On your recommendation, I will have to work harder to get that movie in our queue.
