The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I've noticed that many retro gamers tend to favor shooters and fighting games. I couldn't conclusively state whether or not those genres are more representative of the early days of gaming than RPGs, but it could be.
Perhaps it's just that while everyone here was playing the likes of 1942 in the arcade they were getting their RPG fixes through pen and paper. I'm on the cusp of the pen and paper generation, but I certainly played my fair share of text based mmos and PC RPGs in EGA.
I just don't see people discussing that stuff on here though.

I don't know if thats the case. those two genres along with platformers were prevelant w/ earlier systems, but this site covers consoles up to last generation. I think maybe it has to do with console preference. i noticed this site leans towards sega especially the saturn and to a slightly lesser extent the dreamcast, and both of those systems weren't really known for their rpgs. the snes, ps1, and ps2 are the systems known for their rpgs. looking back over the threads the saturn rpgs get a lot of mention but the other consoles get left out. I know there are several rpgs on the nes and a few on the master system, maybe some previous to those. so, rpgs have been around long enough to get love from the retro community.General Chaos wrote:I've noticed that many retro gamers tend to favor shooters and fighting games. RPG sucks!!! How's that for discussion??? Just kidding. I think people who plays fighter and shmups get their down time with RPG's. This might be a bad metaphor but it's kinda like having a stable girlfriend at home, but sometimes you just need a quick fling when you are away from home.

I don't know if RPGs necessarily brought the PSX to the number one spot. I think they ended up being a big deciding factor between getting a PSX and an N64, as the SNES had a huge number of quality RPGs in the 16 bit era that you couldn't get anymore now that Square moved to the PSX. But I feel the reason the PSX beat out the Saturn was that it was an overall more attractive platform. Aside from the obvious price difference, it was a much easier platform to develop for. The Saturn's dual processor design and square-based rendering (as opposed to triangle based) meant that it was harder to develop for the Saturn, which in turn cuts down on the number of games for it.Ok, so bring them up. Start discussing some. Let's talk RPGs and how they brought the PlayStation to the number 1 spot.
Interestingly enough, Sony ended up pulling something similar with this generation. $100 more than the competitor, complicated multi-processor design, heck, even the install base situation looks similar to the Saturn/PSX war. Saturn was more popular in Japan, but since the US is a much larger market it ended up losing out in the end. The PS3 is in the same situation, more popular in Japan, but less units overall.
I still collect them, but don't have time to play them anymore. Shmups, puzzlers, fighters, and platformers offer a satisfying retro gaming fix without consuming all your time. If it's good enough, I'll still give them a shot. The most recent ones I played were Windwaker, Tales of the Abyss and Okami.....mostly action rpgs except abyss, which actually has a beat 'em up fighting system.
PS1 and snes have the best variety of rpg's but the genesis and saturn have a few quality titles. The Shining series is my favorite all time, but square but out so many good games on PS1 I didn't even pick up a Saturn until 2004. The ps1 had good distribution was pretty easy to program for, had good sound and color palette. What more can you ask for. The sprites in games like Legend of Mana and Saga Frontier look sooo amazing and colorful I think they rival the Saturn. Sony had better marketing, and was able to release and distribute more. That in combination of having Square sealed the deal for the ps1.
