Re: 2013 Together Retro Planning Thread
@Ryan, a modern game would go against the point of the whole TR concept anyway (to spend time on older games you may have missed). I feel like newer games -- especially ones with retro themes end up getting threads made here anyway and folks play/comment together anyway.
...
Ok guys to tighten things up... I think we'll end up polling Bubble Bobble vs. Game & Watch. For those of you interesting in Mario/Virtua Tennis, what game choice would you poll it against?

Re: 2013 Together Retro Planning Thread
I would replace either Wing Commander or Half Life myself, but that's just my bias I guess, because neither of those interest me.
I probably won't vote either way for G&W vs Bubble Bobble, because I'm happy with either. I'll let everyone else decide that one
As for the other 'poll' threads, I know which way I'll be going. Parappa is a more important rhythm game than SC5 imo, and I've also played the latter to death. I'm not into Survival Horror, so I'll pick ZAMN & HotD2 for October. And I'd rather play Lemmings than Puyo Puyo because A) I've played Puyo to death, and B ) We've done match block matching puzzle games both this year (panel de pon) and last (zoop), and I feel Lemmings will offer something different. Plus, being western developed, a possible interview perhaps?

Re: 2013 Together Retro Planning Thread
I'd put Virtua Tennis in place of G&W and Bubble Bobble.
But... haven't we played Virtua Tennis before? Or am I just not remembering correctly?

Re: 2013 Together Retro Planning Thread
we have not, but I just realized something... we DID play House of the Dead 2 already (http://racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=11231) as part of the 2009 "Sega Light Gun Extravaganza"... it was HOTD's, Virtua Cop, Time Crisis, Ghost Squad. So probably it's a good idea to not repeat and to make October's double-bill Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Silent Hill 2.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:But... haven't we played Virtua Tennis before? Re: 2013 Together Retro Planning Thread
When I said "community", I meant *this* community, the people here at RB. I think a game like DE would definitely command a large thread with those who've played it and not played it. I love reading through pages of discussions, that's the best part of a TR, and those games that generate a lot of interest and talk fit well.dsheinem wrote:Exed, if your argument for Deus Ex vs. Half Life is about a "community aspect," I don't see any argument at all. Half Life sparked a ton of community creation, modding, etc. in a way that only a few games before or since have ever done - and Deus Ex is not among them.
But as much as I'd love to put DE out here, I see that it was a game that missed out on so many TRs in the past and if there was talk of getting a HL-related guest on the podcast and stuff, I don't want to be the one that has to hear "DAMN EE AND HIS GAME HE RUINED THE PODCAST SERIES AND RB"
That's a good idea. I think a lot of people are gonna love those G&W games, and as a whole, they do have a lot of history, as they would evolve into more forays into portability in gaming for Nintendo and other companies.noiseredux wrote:Game & Watch takes the place of Bubble Bobble which hadn't gotten much praise. G&W isn't golden age arcade, but it's certainly got some major historical importance. I switched this to Feb as a compromise, and can't imagine that anyone would argue that shorter mini-game kind of games make sense to occupy the shortest month?
I liked HOTD2 & ZAMN. I've got a DC light gun now dammit!noiseredux wrote:October needs to be sorted out. We all agree we'll play a horror double-feature, so we need to decide which two of these three. I'm happy to play any of them: either two arcadey shooting games, or one arcadey shooter game and one slow-burner. Our rhythm choice is still between SC5 and Parappa.
Thoughts on all this, folks?

Not only did I miss that month which would have been super-awesome, now I gotta go find the PC port of SH2 on eBay. I hope it isn't entirely hard to find.
Finally, as far as a tennis game is concerned, I'd go VT, if only because I've got both on the DC and they're really the best.

Re: 2013 Together Retro Planning Thread
If the choice is between tennis and Road Rash, I'm gonna pick RR everytime. Also, what is H-L available on? I'm only aware of PS2 and PC ATM.
For FF Special, I'm gonna do a multi-port comparison. I've got it for SNES,SFC,GG,NGCD,PS2, and I plan on picking up an AES copy 'cause it's relatively cheap. That should keep me busy for that month.
