So I just watched Bad Taste...

...you know, the eating puke scene really didn't bother me. I was actually bothered more by watching Peter Jackson shove his brains back in his head than I was at watching a crowd of guys eat blue vomit. In fact, I found the eating puke scene to be funny. In fact, the film was downright hilarious at times, and watching that sheep explode will never get old. I still like Dead Alive more, but then again, Dead Alive had a lawnmower and a guy who kicks ass for the Lord. And both movies feature characters being "born again."

As for who got the most brutal death...hmm...I think my favorite was the pine cone chucking alien torn in half by the car. Seeing his intestines pop up over the hood was priceless.

So after the Hobbit, I hope Peter Jackson returns to this kind of schlock!

Watched an old classic last night.

I'm not putting this one behind a spoiler tag as I tried to make it pretty spoiler free (minus the images). Still, if you haven't seen it and want to ere on the side of caution, feel free to skip my post.

Hellraiser

I think Imma go with Demon *nods*

Let me start off saying that I love this movie. It's probably one of my favorite horror movies, as there really isn't anything else quite like it. Pain, pleasure, demons, mystical monsters, gore, slasher-like sacrifices...this movie's got a little bit of everything. And of course, the greatest draw are the cenobites, and with good reason.

Image
I mean, just look at them.

They are truly nightmarish and the figure of Pinhead has become so iconic that even if you've never seen a single Hellraiser film, chances are you're familiar with the face. And Doug Bradley plays the role with such a confident, serious and eerily calm demeanor that it leaves no question that this isn't a group you'd ever want to trifle with. They're all so cool and creepy that it's really a pity they aren't on the screen all that much :?

Another thing I'm always continually impressed with is how well the film is shot. For a horror film, there is excellent use of symbolic imagery and angles.

Image
Also, a head on a plate.

Image
A very ethereal scene...doesn't really fit into the rest of the film, but it's
damn pretty... even with all the blood.

Not to mention good use of light and shadow.

Image
Wouldn't be so dark if you'd pay your electric bill, smuck.

It's really very pretty once you get past all the icky, sticky, bloody parts.

That said, though it is one of my favorites, I must admit that it does have a couple small flaws. The first is it's slightly slow pace. The movie really picks up at the half-way mark, and there is enough going on to keep you curious, but some of the earlier scenes seem unnecessarily slow and drawn out.

The second issue has to do with the special effects. Now before you freak out, no, I'm not referring to anything that has to do with the gore.

Image
Few scenes can continue to keep me as fascinated and make me as squeamish as this one.

The make-up and effects of those scenes are excellent, even more-so when you consider the film's smaller budget.

Image
I cringe at the number of hours this must have taken to put on....also, because he's, well, icky.

No, the effects I'm referring too are those really early CGI shots most often centered around the puzzle box. Sadly, they have become very dated and stick out like a sore thumb when compared to the rest of the film.

That said, there's nothing else quite like Hellraiser and if you like horror movies it's practically required viewing.

Also, I really need to remember to pick up the sequel, as I feel it's equally as good. After that the series sort of takes a nose-dive, but the second one is a proper continuation of the first film.

I ordered THE LOST BOYS on Blu Ray from Amazon on Monday, received it yesterday. Needless to say I had to watch it immediately.

I love everything about this movie. I love the Frog Brothers, Sam, Micheal, Lucy, Grandpa, Nanook and even Max. I really, really love Star. Love the humor, love the design of the vampires, love the soundtrack, love the action. Love the comic shop, love the vampire deaths.

I even love the scene featuring a singing body builder with a pony tail who also plays the saxophone.

Not sure how THE LOST BOYS would be received by a younger crowd but when I was approaching teenagedom, every boy wanted to be someone from the movie. I was no different.

I"m very glad I picked this up, and it's on the cheap over at Amazon if you are interested.

I think it is funny how much we both like the genre yet so wildly disagree on some films therein. I guess that's what makes it a fun genre to discuss!

I'm a little shocked there is a board member with the handle Goregasm, and that he isn't all over this thread.

I'm a pretty big horror fan, but my fandoms are cyclic and I'm "low" on horror (and movies in general) at the moment. Still, I'm thinking it might be a good time to rewatch Evil Dead II as I haven't seen it in years. Maybe some Hammer Dracula movies and Bride of Frankenstein to spice things up.

I rewatched Alien for the first time since high school the other day. Really a great film and the only one of the series that's actually a horror movie.

Oh and nobody mentioned it yet, but folks should check out the movie Trick 'r Treat if they haven't yet. It's a FANTASTIC movie that came out a few years ago featuring everything awesome about Halloween.
