I need to add:

MONSTER HOUSE
FRANKENWEENIE (1984)*
CORALINE
PARANORMAN

*I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm shocked at how few people have watched or even heard about Frankenweenie. The domino effect it created accounts for some of my favorite films of all time. It's always fun to take jabs at Tim Burton, but there is no denying he's made some incredible films (also some stinkers).
It saddens me that you now have to write "(1984)" after "Frankenweenie"

I know. I love the original film. Although I am really excited for the new movie too. I just wish they called it something else. :\

Just as long as I don't have to type "HOME ALONE (1990)" anytime soon I'm fine with it.

At least I can say I've seen Frankenweenie '84 :)

No Nightmare Before Christmas? Unless you consider it more of a Christmas movie....

 God forbid that movie from ever receiving a remake...

In any event, my wife and I just watched:

Insidious (2010) - The first half was good - if run-of-the-mill - haunted house fare (i.e., a gray filter, good sound editing, the occasional jump scare, a building sense of dread and mystery). The back half, however, was just a mess...like a cross between a Rob Zombie music video and an episode of Nickelodeon's "Are You Afraid of the Dark?". Once the main characters began confronting the spirits, it became apparent that the movie was going to be nothing more than a second-rate Poltergeist, and my wife and I spent the back half of the movie rolling our eyes. The "twist" at the end was obvious to anyone that has ever seen a horror movie before (or heard a ghost story...or seen any movie, really), and the movie - taking a cue from "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" - tried to create a threatening atmosphere by simply placing some dry ice on the floor. That said, the first half was good; so, I cannot say that the movie is entirely without merit. I would not recommend it, however.

the first half was really good. The second half was terrible and made me mad that the movie had even been made.

I am glad to see that we are on the same page (although, I actually thought Paranormal Activity was pretty good...).

Paranormal could have been much better, but I found the acting really poor. If you are making a movie that is supposed to trick me into thinking it's just fly-on-the-wall real life, then I shouldn't feel like you're reciting lines from a script. I think The Blair Witch Project was successful in sounding like the dialogue was off the cuff (probably because much of it was unscripted). So yeah, the premise I liked but the acting would often pull me out.

That said, I did think the 2nd Paranormal was a big improvement. Enough so that I'd still be interested in seeing the 3rd and 4th.

Dead on Noise, dead on.

Any why in the hell isn't POLTERGEIST on my list? I'll never forget the moment when I realized the parents in that movie were stoners.

I was junior in college, at a girlfriend's house, I was wearing Joe Boxer boxers and recouping after a long night of debauchery and Natural Light. Stayed in bed, fooled around, and then "Holy Crap! Coach is rolling a doobie!".

Just one of the many things that went over my head as a child*.

I remember telling my 4th grade teacher (female) that she needed to "calm down and get a blow job". *hangs head in shame* I honestly thought a blow job meant having someone mow your yard and clear off your driveway.

The 3rd. one is WAY better than the first 2. It's actually scary and tense.
