Wing Commander (the original) and Wing Commander The Secret Missions made it to the SNES and some computers. I believe other ports exist. Those were some great games. Good suggestion!

I'll get behind F-Zero X and Wing Commander II. I know there aren't any ports but if your PC is good enough for racketboy it is good enough for WCII. That won't be a problem. BTW, some fan made an English DC version of Space Channel 5-2, if you must play on Dreamcast.

I would say for series that have sequels it would be better, if such series hasn't been done already in Together Retro, to always start off with the first game in the series for those who never played any of the games. Just my 2 cents.

Of course there are exceptions like for "black sheeps" of certain series or simulation games or what-have-you, but just as a general rule of thumb (I would suggest).

Hey, I just wanted to interject another FPS option; would anyone be opposed to the Timesplitters series?

It's on the Gamecube -- I'm cool with it  But I think one of the games fetches a demanding price on eBay, I remember going there after seeing it on a Metal Jesus video.

:?: Really? AFAIK, all the games on available systems were rather inexpensive. Might have to dig a little on this.

I think if we pick a console exclusive FPS we'll alienate a lot of FPS players...

IMO SC5 part 2 is a better game (guitar/instrument battles, more Space Michael, moves respond more directly to inputs etc.), but I would not say it is so much better that we should automatically pick it instead of the first one.

On the other hand, there is a "hack" that transplants the PS2 audio into the DC version, and the japanese DC one is easy to play (there are a few menu options that we could explain on the article for example) and you can even sort of follow the (weird) story. Given the game's weirdness, I found it somewhat charming to play in Japanese - the ideal for me would have been English subtitles, as I like the original voices (although I think the English voices on SC5 were also well chosen).

Update 3:

First, some notes:
Any time anyone wasnt totally clear if they were endorsing a game, I just assumed they were and added the vote.

For Wing Commander, I've counted all votes for any entry in the series as one, although 2 seems a weird place to start to me.

The Rhythm genre seems the most contested so far, but RPGs have had the most suggestions.

If we dead set on having a 'classic arcade' month, I can take all the golden oldies out of their seperate categories and group them together?

I've included myself as a +1 for Bubble Bobble, although this is the first time I've said so! It's actually the most popular arcade suggestion atm.

And finally, yet another suggestion from moi!

Image
TITLE: Guilty Gear
GENRE: Fighting
SYSTEM: Lots? Depends which version we go for. I'd recommend GGX or GGXX for the most options.
WHY?: Because the characters are awesome and it's a 2D fighter that looks less generic than your usual Street Fighter clone.
