Magnavox CD-I console disc motor not spinning

Post by executioner »

Hello guys! This is a frustrating case, bought a CD-I on ebay last year good price but came with no controllers and no receiver for the infrared remote it came with. Before, I thought that it did not boot up disc automatically because you had to input start or something on the controller so I did not worry.

After looking around for months and months try to find a controller, went and bought one of the only things available which is a sega to cd-i controller adapter cable. Now after it finally arrives find out that disc do boot automatically and the unit just doesn't spin the discs. The laser itself moves up and down trying to read, but the motor doesn't spin. So I'm pretty much getting angry and frustated with this one and hope you can help me out fixing this one. I dissasembled it and everything seems fine. If you have any pointers, my knowledge of this things are basic but I can open up anything and solder a little bit.

Do you have a multimeter? Basically you need to see if the motor is getting power or not. I've never worked on one, but you should see a difference in DC voltage when you would expect to see the motor move. If you are getting a voltage change (I'd expect you should see 2.5 - 5.0 volts), then the motor is bad. If you aren't then it is simply somewhere else. Check the boards for fuses and start from there.

it could be the same problem that the old 360s have. You could just blast some wd40 in the motor spindle, and see if that works.

Thanks already did that! Tried the multimeter voltage changed, motor seems bad. After some research found info on the replacement think I will buy the whole assembly for about $20, will update on the experiment.
