Resident Evil 2
Survival Horror
PS1, N64, PC, GameCube, Dreamcast, PS3/PSP (PSN download), Game.com (if you're sadistic) Why should we play it?
Resident Evil 2 really pushed the series forward and many would argue (myself probably included) that it is the best title in the series. It introduced new characters which have become fan-favorites over the years. Resident Evil 2 on the N64 is also a huge technological achievement; they were able to squeeze two PlayStation discs on a cartridge without any significant loss (other than grainier FMV's).
Gosh, opa... I really would like an excuse to play RE2, but we did RE1 a couple years ago. Not sure I like the idea of re-visiting a series for TR so soon when we've got others to look into. For instance Silent Hill. SH1 is on PS1 and avaible on PSN (and if you are sadistic like me, there's also the "remake"). Or of course SH2 is considered the high-point and is on what? PS2, Xbox, PS3, 360 (kind of), PC.
Of course I'm assuming that a game like SH would be the October pick, and I also kind of like the October double-bill. An SH game is more involved so might not be a good pick for a double-bill like the more arcadey games Dave referenced.
Although maybe some of you would like the option of say something like SH if you wanted a more involved horror game or say HOTD2 if you wanted an arcadey October game... ?
Hydro Thunder
Racing
DC,PS1,N64,PS2,oXBOX,GC
It's a fun racer
Rayman 2:The great escape
PC,DC,PS1/2,N64,iPod,(3)DS
Platformer
One of the best 3D platformers i've ever played, plus there are lots of versiosn of it, some with new stuff!
-I can get behind PaRappa over SC5. Consider my vote shifted.
-I like the Game and Watch idea too, but not sure what I'd sub out from my list for it.
-I don't like Pirates and that would be a second "adventure" game if we go with Dizzy (which everyone so far seems to like as a pick)
-An F-Zero game is a nice pick, but I'd prefer Road Rash as the racing title. Plus they are better ported to a wider variety of systems...
RE: AppleQueso
-I think FFVI is a better pick over FFV becasue it is slightly more readily available and slightly better ported in most instances. I'd be happy with either, though.
RE: noise
-I think an arcadey-type series (like Road Rash) is fine to focus on becasue you can quickly get a feel for differences and nuances across titles. Obviously something like the Metal Gear, Resident Evil , Silent Hill, etc. series it is harder get a good handle on all those differences. We're doing it with the Crush series this month and I think it works fine...

We played Rayman 1 already (and recently), so like noise is with RE, I am hesitant to do a sequel.

I only threw series just so we can have a discussion and break the games down and pick *one* game that might be the best as a community to discuss and play. Plus, my series have at least the ports to support such an idea.
As for DSH's suggestion on ZAMN for next October, you have my support. Needs to be played. I've owned and enjoyed the game for years. Plus it has the length a good TR game needs. Book it, done.

Summary 2: Trying a different, less space consuming format. Organised by Genre, then votes. Some of these games loosely fit into a genre, and thus could double up. Some could potentially fit into 2 genres. Dizzy for example could also be a platformer, and is different enough to zork to allow both to be played should we want to imo.
Anyway:
Action Adventure:
Metal Gear 2 (2), Zelda: Minish Cap (1), Startropics (1)
Adventure:
Dizzy (3), Zork (3)
Beat 'em Up:
Streets of Rage (1), Golden Axe (1), Rushing Beat (1)
Fighting:
Tech Romancer (2), Fatal Fury Special (2)
FPS:
Half Life (2), Goldeneye (1)
Horror:
Resident Evil 2 (1)
Platformer:
Journey to Silius (1), Blaster Master (1), Donkey Kong Country (1), Rayman 2 (1)
Rail Shooter:
House of the Dead 2 (3), Elemental Gearbolt (2), Silent Scope (1), Starfox (1)
Rhythm:
Space Channel 5 (4), Parappa the Rapper (3)
RPG:
Baldurs Gate (2), Ultima 4 (1), Breath of Fire (1), Paper Mario (1), Dragon Warrior (1), FFVI (1), FFV (1)
Run 'n Gun:
Zombies Ate My Neighbours (3), Shock Troopers (1)
Shmup:
Twinkle Star Sprites (2), Ikaruga (1), MUSHA (1), ThunderForce III (1), Centipede (1)
Sports:
Mario Tennis (1), Virtua Tennis (1)
Strategy:
Pirates! (1)
Other:
Game & Watch (2), MULE (2), Spy Hunter (2), Ace Combat 4 (1), Elevator Action (1)
NOTES: Both Space Channel 5 and Parappa include dsheinems votes, I figured if we started 'moving' votes then it gets confusing, so I just counted both.
I didn't know whether to count F Zero and F Zero X together or seperately. Same for FFV and FFVI. For now I left them seperate.
I'd be interested in HOTD2 if it can be expanded to include Typing of the Dead too :p
you're a big help, AJ. Things are starting to take shape. Let me just use this post as a scratch pad so we can all see how things might tentatively look...
Jan - RPG - Baldur's Gate
Feb - Puzzle - Puyo Puyo
Mar - Action/Adv - Metal Gear 2
Apr - FPS - Half-Life 2
May - Platformer - Dizzy
Jun - Fighting - Fatal Fury Special
Jul - Racing - Road Rash series
Aug - (something else arcade)
Sep - Text Aventure - Zork
Oct - Horror Double Feature - House of the Dead 2 / Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Nov - Rhythm - Space Channel 5 or Parappa (poll)
Dec - Strategy - MULE
...note I try to put longer games in colder/longer months and more arcady games in hotter/shorter months. And Sept seemed a good "reading game" month for you back-to-schoolers. That said, not sure what to do with August. Could put in a run-n-gun or shmup... which reminds me, do we like ZAMN as double-bill with HOTD2 or do we prefer Silent Hill 2 with HOTD2?

I don't know why we couldn't have both an involved horror game AND an arcadey game.
Horror games rarely last more than 10-12 hours.

WHAT IS EVERYONE'S THOUGHTS ON THE ABOVE?
August would be a good place for Twinkle Star Sprites
