Do you like the direction video games are going In?

Post by garrett123 »

What the popular genres of games are in 2012, do you like what is "popular" with the adverage gamer now, the music in games, artwork, what they generally have in the game, to convince you to get it, like online co-op ect. digital games may also be considered a gaming direction, but many think consoles will be here for many years to come

so, do you like what the 2012 gaming world considers a "good" game, some people like video games period, but there does seem to be alot of the same types of games/genre, becuase that is what gamers want now, not saying there are other genres still being made.

I was thinking about something a lot recently. One thing that concerns me as a console gamer, is that console gaming has been gradually losing its identity this generation. When you look at what's popular now, it's all stuff with roots in PC gaming like first person shooters, third person shooters, and western rpgs. Plus, you have digital games, lots of online emphasis, it's all PC oriented stuff. Japanese games, the backbone of console gaming for many, many years, has been falling out of style for a few years now. It's a bit sad, as those are still primarily the types of games that I like. Now and days, most of the Japanese style games I find are on digital download services. The 60 dollar, big budget, physical media games are mostly just genres that flourished for years on PC

I want Japanese games to get great again, and I want to see more of them. In a lot of ways, Japanese gaming and console gaming are almost synonymous. I don't want to see console gaming just morph into PC gaming.

Agreed. To me consoles and console games have lost their identity and have become standardized PC's. Installs, updates, monthly fees, bugs galore, and DLC is used to generate more money, not extend the life of games. Perhaps it was the direction that consoles were inevitably headed but for me it's difficult to get excited about anything related to modern gaming. Endless sequels, repetitive concepts, and flash over substance and it doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.

And all of these PC game genres were also dumbed down for casuals when they were moved from PC to consoles. And with consoles we've also lost many of the things that made many PC games great, modding, hosting your own servers, game communities and so on. PC games suffered from this move as much as console gaming, and as a result neither the PC games nor the consoles games of today are as good as the PC games&console games of the 1990s/early 2000s.
