Xenogears fans, help me out...

Post by turbolegs »

I started playing Xenogears around a year ago but for many reasons, I haven't touched it since.

I tried to continue my game today but honestly, I have no idea what's going on.

I implore you, can somebody give me a rough synopsis of the story so far? I looked online but I'm wary of spoilers.

I'm in A-block prison, wherever that is and I just stopped a giant ship from crashing into a nuclear reactor. I remember a little of the start, and something about Elly making peoples brains explode...

I actually wanted to help you, but the story is such a mess I don't remember what you are supposed to know or not at that stage!

Yeah that's what I figured, I might just have to brave a plot synopsis and hope I don't ruin the story too badly.

Why not start over? I remember some critical events lead up to the part you're at, but you've still barely scratched the surface of the game.

Barely scratched the surface? Oh dear. I'm 18 hours in, and so far its been a bit of a slog.

The translation is pretty poor and Fei's best friends at this point appear to be a Blanka clone and a giant talking Rat. I have heard such good things about this game, and I really enjoy the hand to hand combat element but without a plot to string it all together maybe its not worth the investment of my time. That's not to say that long games are a turn-off, i'm loving DQ8 at the moment.

Don't start over. In terms of plot you have scratched the surface, but in terms of game they really pile on the plot in the 2nd half... I read the synopsis in wikipedia and I think it is fairly spoiler free if you stop at the right part, but the parts about the characters is before that and does have spoilers. So I'll copy paste.

So from wikipedia...

Xenogears centers around the protagonist Fei Fong Wong, an adopted young male in the village, Lahan, brought by a mysterious "masked man" three years ago. The events surrounding Fei's arrival at the village cause him to have retrograde amnesia. During a battle between Gebler and Kislev forces taking place in Lahan, Fei pilots an empty gear named Weltall in an attempt to defend the village against both groups of gears. Witnessing the death of his friend during this battle causes a dormant personality within him to awaken, under whose influence Fei then destroys the entire village. Fei later awakens with no recollection of what happened and is told that he had lost consciousness and that the gear had gone berserk. As a result, Fei and Citan, the village's doctor, decide to leave Lahan with the abandoned gear to get it away from the surviving villagers. In his travels, Fei meets Elly, a marooned Gebler officer, and Grahf, a cryptic and maniacal masked man who claims to know about Fei's past. Eventually, Fei and Citan find themselves captured by Bartholomew, a desert pirate and exiled heir to the throne of Aveh. Fei again loses control of himself inside his gear while elsewhere Bart and Citan are attacked by an unknown red gear. Fei wakes up in a Kislev prison and meets Wiseman, a mysterious masked man who originally brought Fei to Lahan.

I think that is where you are, I think there is some kind of murder mistery in the prison now and you will be investigating it with "Blanka" (Rico).

Thanks Ivo!

I was trying to avoid spoilers and that's actually a pretty good synopsis I think.

Any idea what a rough completion time might be for a first play through?

according to this site: http://howlongtobeat.com/gamebreakdown.php?gameid=948

you're looking at a 60ish hour game.

So far, I have found that website to vastly overstate the actual time required to beat. Even though the category says the minimum time, it seems most people entering data are either just guessing, or entering in the time required for much more than the minimum.
