Breath of Fire 4 or Wild Arms?

Post by Kahokian »

I am just about to finish up grandia for ps1 (first play through and I love the music in this game). I have stocked piled a few good rpgs to get into. I have played and beaten BOF 1-3 but I have yet to any wild arms games at all. Any suggestions on which one I should start up?

Always hear good things about Wild Arms myself, though I have to say BoF4 is one of my top favorites.

Only own Wild Arms 3 and 5, but WA3 is one of my top favorite RPGs for the PS2. I highly recommend it. You can also get it for cheap (at least I did).

Wild arms is one of those games that I always hear about but unfortunately never played. How is the series? I guess I would say play Wild Arms because I played Bof 2 and 3 and was not impressed. If the 4th game is anything like those two then I probably won't like it either. Also I think the Wild arms games are a little bit cheaper and easier to find than the Bof games

I played all of the Wild Arms games except for Wild Arms XF. I absolutely loved the story of the first Wild Arms game. The battle system is not as deep as some games but the game does the story very well. I have not played Breath of Fire 4 so I do not have an opinon on that game. It is a wild west RPG but a JRPG at heart but the whistling theme is a very nice touch. I say give it a shot, there are a lot worst RPG's you could be playing.

Overall I would take Wild Arms 1 and 2 over Breath of Fire 1 and 2, but, Breath of Fire 3 and 5 over Wild Arms 3 and beyond (I haven't dipped very much into the very promising Breath of Fire 4). The Wild Arms games are very charming and have a unique feel. The wild west/steampunk setting is really awesome and sets them apart from the rest of the herd quite a bit. Overall you really can't go wrong with any of these games, they're all very enjoyable in my experience. Breath of Fire is going to offer your classic JRPG experience and very much deliver, and Wild Arms like I said has it's unique charm and setting, fun Zelda puzzle elements, great music, and a big anime vibe if that's your thing.

So, to answer your question more directly, maybe check out the original Wild Arms, if you've already cleared most of the Breath of Fire games. It'll be something new, and it's definitely a solid game, with loads of personality. Although I have no doubt that Breath of Fire 4 is greatness, couldn't hurt to dabble with a new franchise.

I would echo what folks on here are saying about the unique style of Wild Arms. We don't see enough wild west-themed games in general, and finding a JRPG in that genre is practically impossible. I recently beat WA3, and while I felt things got a bit tedious with some of the sidequests, it was an enjoyable experience. I've played through half of the first but need to go back and finish it.

As for Breath of Fire 4, I've never played it. I've beaten Breath of Fire 3 and absolutely love it, but I have heard that BoF4 was even better. Can't confirm though.

Basically, flip a coin. It's a win-win.

If you play Wild Arms Alter Code F (the remake of the first Wild Arms) and take your save file and play Wild Arms 4 then you will get some extra bonuses when you start that game.

Thanks guys. Awesome responses. I ultimately chose bof 4. I have played countless jrpg since I encountered what the rpg genre was all about. My first rpg I ever played was earthbound! I was around 10 years old and I saw that my local family video here in town had this snes game for sale I had never heard of, plus it had a huge ass box that came with it. Best 10 bucks I ever spent in my life to date. There is just something about the bof series that has always drawn me in. Maybe because the original bof for the snes is the second rpg I ever played...IDK but I really like the music thus far in the 4th installment. It took me a few hours to get use to using the camera but it seems like it is going to be a great experience. Dragons and I kid with blue hair? whats better lol

I also agree there is not enough wild west themed games. I love the idea of the Wild Arms series. In a few weeks I will be playing the first installment.

One type of RPG game I have always wanted to construct has been a halloween/ghost n goblins/horror/scary type of rpg. Like just a completely dark rpg with nothing but ghosts, vampires, pumpkins, skeletons lol the whole nine yards. Like Threed in EB meets nightmare before christmas in kingdom hearts meets monster party for the nes meets castlevania/jack bros. Also with some stephen king gunslinger (dark tower) elements thrown in there. But I want it to be more of a 2d rpg....where is this game at lol
