The movie looks quite good. And it's one of the few sci-fi movies I can convince my wife to go with me to because of Bruce Willis.

I freaking love Fifth Element. Excellent sci-fi movie with some great tongue-in-cheek humor.

Dark Star (1974) by John Carpenter - a somewhat absurdist science fiction, with a dose of black comedy thrown in for good measure, that follows the downfall of a lonely, four-man crew aboard Dark Star; a deep space demolitions ship designed to destroy unstable planets before they collide with their own stars. Many of the Carpenter hallmarks are present here, even at this early stage in his career, and the film builds good tension at the start, helped in no small part by the pulsating synthesised soundtrack. The special effects are more inventive than accomplished, but given the student film-level budget, are entirely excusable. I wasn't aware that the film was intended to be humorous, right up until the point that the 'beach-ball with claws' makes an appearance. The humour feels out of place at first, but as the situation on-board Dark Star escalates, and the eccentricities of the crew become more and more detrimental to their survival, it becomes entirely appropriate. I adored the talking bomb, the computer AI's synthetic familiarity ("Hate to bother you fellas..."), the quirks of the crews and their antagonistic nature towards each other, while the ending was genuinely hilarious. A fun film with a unique charm, that I can't decide if it's hindered or helped by the tiny budget. 6/10

EDIT - WTF is this crap? I stopped when the cheap alien balloon showed up. This film is hard to take seriously.
