Haha this was awesome. I haven't been able to drink the Avengers Kool-Aid, and this does a good job explaining at least some of the reasons why (and in a humorous way). It is FAR from one of the best comic book films, and while it has a certain mindless charm and the right mix of explosions and one-liners, it is both overlong and rushed, compelling and cliched.

Ashes and Diamonds (1958) by Andrzej Wajda - set in Poland at the very end of World War 2, 'Ashes & Diamonds' follows a young hit man named Maciek hired to kill communist party official Szczuka, but through a chance meeting with barmaid Krzystyna he begins to have doubts about his actions and the direction of his life. As Maciek struggles with his duty, his desires and his conscience, his story becomes allegorical of Poland as a whole, a Poland emerging from the war occupied by a communist power. "I just want to live", he declaims, as so does his country, but they both still find themselves shackled to their pasts, and still having to fight for their freedom and their ideals even after the war's conclusion. 'Ashes and Diamonds' is an expertly crafted thriller, each shot perfectly framed and deftly composed to provide some wonderfully arresting, iconic and symbolic imagery. Among many excellent moments, the final scene is particularly striking as the camera lingers on Maciek, resigned to his duty, but cursing his fate. Overall, 'Ashes and Diamonds' is a compelling and powerful film, with a cast of intriguing characters and some beautiful cinematography, and it is one that speaks volumes about the tone of society in post-war Poland. 9/10

Bootaaay wrote:Time of the Wolf (2003) by Michael Haneke - a strange and sparse post-apocalyptic drama stripped down to the barest essentials in order to examine the effects the unnamed cataclysm has on ordinary people, and the drastic and disturbing measures they turn to in order to survive. The story follows a young French family from the city travelling to their remote summer home in the country, who find when they arrive that some global disaster has befallen while they were en-route and that, as supplies dwindle, society begins to crumble. While the film feels intentionally vague and ambiguous, and what some might consider dull as it meanders along with little change in pace or scenery, it is the strength of the characters that kept me interested. None of the characters can be easily defined as good or bad, they all have their shades of grey, no matter how slight, and that is only magnified by the need for survival the premise presents. Overall, I found Time of the Wolf a difficult film, bleak and depressing in equal measure, but one that is also a unique and uncompromising drama. 7/10

One note, I didn't really appreciate seeing what was clearly a real horse executed on camera. It just seemed needless after a shot of the horse being shot to then have a prolonged close-up of the horse as it's throat was slit. I wouldn't say it detracts from the film, but it kinda took me out of the moment for a good few minutes.
I'm about to watch Haneke's Funny Games.

Has anyone watched the PINK PANTHER starring Steve Martin?

No way he can top Sellers, but is this even worth watching? Is it true to the story line? The trailer looks like recycled garbage (to the point where I wonder if I've already watched this movie) but it is hard for me to not catch any Pink Panther movie.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Both are the same thing, the big difference is the cast.

I don't really like Funny Games though, it's way too nihilistic and the part where they break the fourth wall was way unnecessary. Haneke's other films are great though (The Piano Teacher, Caché and The White Ribbon are particularly amazing).

I'm guessing at this point he may be on the 5th floor, and you're laughing while saying "Ohhhhh!" at the same time.

I enjoyed it, but I as well cannot see why people think it's the best superhero film ever. I place it on about the same level as Iron Man 1. Which happens to be the best non-Batman superhero film ever IMO, but still inferior to all three Nolan Batmans.

Really, the Avengers is basically a Michael Bay film in an alternate universe where he knows how to make good movies.
