Inside a Japanese Arcade

Screw these Japanese arcades and their actual good selection of games. Over here every arcade has Cruisin' USA. And maybe 1 or 2 other 15 year old cabs.

Hydro Thunder, Rush 2049, and maybe Crazy Taxi is all we tend to have.

Oh and there's usually a neglected Ms. Pac Man cab in the back corner.

How did that extra "r" even get in there? I would think that the person making the sign would consult a dictionary before committing it to a permanent fixture. Maybe it's similar to how people in certain areas of the USA say "warsh" instead of "wash". "George Warshington"

In a nutshell, there aren't enough native english speakers around for them to really care whether they spell english words correctly.

Atleast you have arcades. It's better than having no arcades at all. How they even manage to stay profitable?

then why not write it in japanese? i always wondered why there is so much english text in japanese culture especially in japanese games. Does it have to do with americans occupying japan for a while after WW2?

then why not write it in japanese? i always wondered why there is so much english text in japanese culture especially in japanese games. Does it have to do with americans occupying japan for a while after WW2?

Sounds about right for condition, selection, and quality of games in many places. Don't forget those Play Mechanix/Raw Thrills titles that seem to still be cranked out by the dozens every year.

With the exception of possibly *1* place here I try to frequent every month, half the times I see a good title or even pinball table, there's always a control issue, steering wheel issue, or something else wrong with it. I bet even in the most rural hole-in-a-wall arcade in Japan, every cab is in perfect shape and always ready to play.

I once found some arcade game at a Pizza Hut. It was some vertical shmup of some kinda, not sure at all what, but when I put my money in, I quickly discovered that the stick was screwed up and while you could go left no problem, you had to pretty much slam it hard to make the ship move to the right at all.

...that was fun.

Real smart. Only about 15-20% of the cabs actually worked because most of them had been ruined by soaking wet kids.

I adore those Darius Burst cabs - put serious thought into importing one, but they are so damn massive. That elevator action game looks legit! Did you play it? Description please...???

aaaah yes, I remember an arcade built on a beach we spend many summers at. That was awesome. I'd go swimming in the sea and then go and play some Final Fight . Mind it wasn't probably water that caused the damage (it dries off pretty quickly in these temperatures) but the sand from the beach which is much more likely to stick to your hands.



....I miss arcades :'(
