Flashback: Uniracers lets you be a racing rockstar

Post by Erik_Twice »

This time on Flashback I cover one of the best titles on the Super Nintendo, DMA Designs' Uniracers, which may very well the best 2D racer of all time and one of the three games I would buy a SNES for.

Share your thoughts! This is a really great game :)

PD: Pixar sucks!

It's a neat game, but top three? Come on now.

Oh, don't worry, it was top 2 for a good while, DKC2 wasn't originally in the list.

There are definitely better racing games to be played. F-Zero, SMK, and Rock N' Roll Racing are all better imo than uniracers. It's just too basic of a game at this point to enjoy.

You seem pretty new to the forums, so you might not know I'm one of the pickiest gamers around here, so much, in fact, that I made a thread saying how terrible and unfun the Super Nintendo is (http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... =2&t=39693) or, rather, how many of its good games weren't of my taste, leaving me with just three games I would want for it, the obscure Uniracers being one, hence many would find interesting that it would appear in a list where many amazing games didn't make it.

I don't mean to say it is the third best game in the system, primarly because I don't think Top lists make much sense, if any at all.

Concerning the games you mentioned, I do not think they belong to the same genre because in Uniracers you can jump but you cannot steer. It belongs to the same category Motrocross Maniacs belongs to, which is practically the definition of a niche.

I also don't think any of the games you mentioned are very good, but that's beyond the scope of this post. Using your argument, I don't think they are as good as Daytona, OutRun or the also Sega-made F-Zero GX.

Grumpy_Norris strikes again

I have this game in my collection, but I haven't played it enough yet. I'll try it out when I get back from vacation. Nice review though :)

Well, you know the old adage about opinions and bums....

You're right they don't technically belong in the same genre, but to me racing is racing. I prefer my racing games to have some actual depth to them. I'm a racing connoisseur, I've played just so dang many of them. Stuff like motorcross maniacs and this is just bottom of the barrel to me. It has barely any fun factor.

But as I said, opinions...

I played a lot of Uniracers back when it was new, and added it back into my SNES collection as well. I quite enjoy it, and it does still stand out as being fairly unique (Arstechnica had a similar retrospective on it last year).

Personally, I wouldn't put it in quite the same category as most other racing games. It's a lot more like a (very) high speed platformer (making it even more of an oddity on the SNES). It would have been interesting to see where it might have gone as a series had Pixar not killed it, though I'm partly of the mind that it would have been fairly limited (short of an HD revival). Not sure unmanned unicycles would stand up, thematically, to things like Tony Hawk or SSX.

To me the above sounds slightly condescending, its funny that you start about opinions later :)

I happen to love uniracers, especially as a multiplayer game. No top three for me, but i agree with Norris that top lists are usually pretty... well, useless anyway. Im pretty sure i could make a completely different top snes gameslist every day of the week.
