Dreamcast disc read errors

Hi

Over the last week i noticed my dreamcast getting a bit bad with reading discs, sometimes, the disc isn't read at all, sometimes, it will load, but no music, any suggestions what i may do?

I have had good luck cleaning the lens before with a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Sometimes simply the act of cleaning the lens is all it takes, but I tend to go all the way when I clean and take the whole thing apart, clean out all the dust, regrease the rails, etc. good luck!

First, as he said, clean the laser lens LIGHTLY with a q-tip damp with isopropyl or denatured alcohol. If that does not work, then you're going to have to try the potentiometer trick. There are plenty of youtube videos for reference on this.

Also, Ksloth. Were the Dreamcast's worm gear system and rails ever even greased from the factory? I don't actually think they were.

I think you may be right. I remember my Dreamcast being super loud right out of the gate.

When I opened mine up the rail assembly was absolutely clean. Not a single drop of any lubricant, just shiny metal. I've opened up enough PS2's to know that if grease was applied, that's not how it would look even after 13 years. But I was just curious if you knew more than I.
