The recent Jeremy Parish articles (http://jparish.1up.com/) have made me interested in hunting down some Famicom titles. The thing is though, it seems most of the worthwhile Famicom games came out here on the NES anyway. Seeing as I would have to buy a converter, I want to make sure I can find a handful of good titles to import first.
What Japan only titles do you guys consider must haves?
Must have Japan only Famicom games?

Yea I brought up that hidden gem to a lot of forum members who knew nothing about itAck wrote:I'm gonna say that game that was discussed a little while ago, Joy Mecha Fight I believe was the name. That's worth a look.
Some must have Japan only games that I highly recommend are:
- Joy Mecha Fight- Simple Brawler with superb graphics. Made by Nintendo also.
Gradius 2- Japanese only sequel to the original gradius.
Splatterhouse: Wanapaku Graffiti-Yup, Splatterhouse on Famicom. I shit you not. Plays like the others in the series.
Contra-Same game but severly improved with cutscenes and animated backgrounds.
Akumajou Densetsu- AKA Castlevania 3. Same story with Contra, better graphics and sound.
Akumajou Special- AKA Kid Dracula. You basically play as Alucard from the Castlevania series. A lot like Megaman/Rockman)
Famicom Wars- The first in the Advance Wars franchise. If you played the sequels you might notice missing features but it's still good either way.
Parodius Da!- Spoof on Konami's Gradius. It’s a very cute game.

Parodius Da! for Famicom has extra levels I believe. Oh and may I say your so lucky your in Japan! I've always wanted to go, mainly for getting games, but I'm sure there is a lot of things to do. How is communicating over there like?Flak Beard wrote:Yeah I'm almost bought Contra (Gryzor) while I was in Japan, so maybe I should pick that up even though I own Contra for the NES. Also, do you know if the Parodius for Famicom is that much different from the SFC version? I already own the SFC version so that's why I ask.
EDIT: If you have about $100 to spend you coudl look for Akumajou Dracula (Casltevania 1) which has an easy mode where every hit only takes 2 damage and your not blown back by hits.
EDIT 2: ALmost forgot Holy Diver. It's basically Castlevania except with magic beams. I'm sure you'll like it.

Well I don't actually live there, but visited for a couple weeks. My best friend lives in Hiroshima and is flying home for my wedding next month. Maybe I can get him to hunt down a copy Akumajou Dracula for me if he goes to Akiba before flying out. I'm sure it would be way cheaper than buying it off eBay.Kevman wrote:Parodius Da! for Famicom has extra levels I believe. Oh and may I say your so lucky your in Japan! Summer Carnival '92 - Recca is a awesome shmup with lighting fast games play. If you know Japanese Sweet Home is one of the best horror RPGs Ive ever played.
Re: Famicom games
Recca will set him back about $400 though. Even the pirate is about $100.corn619 wrote:Summer Carnival '92 - Recca is a awesome shmup with lighting fast games play. If you know Japanese Sweet Home is one of the best horror RPGs Ive ever played.
