Master System: Not for me? Or am I just not "getting" it?

it's actually not a port of the arcade or the legendary 16-bit handheld named LynxBreetai wrote:Isn't it a port of the arcade version, similar to on the Lynx?sevin0seven wrote:you can also try out Ninja Gaiden. it's a different game from the NES version.

Re: Master System: Not for me? Or am I just not "getting" it
Looks like I have some games to try out!
Once I actually have some time alone with my computer and roms I'll go through the suggestions in this thread and say how I react to the games!
Re: Master System: Not for me? Or am I just not "getting" it
Wow, that looks pretty cool. I looked at some YouTube footage and it appears to play like the others. I'll have to try this one out after I get off my ass and play Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3.sevin0seven wrote:it's actually not a port of the arcade or the legendary 16-bit handheld named LynxBreetai wrote:Isn't it a port of the arcade version, similar to on the Lynx?sevin0seven wrote:you can also try out Ninja Gaiden. it's a different game from the NES version.. it's developed by SIMS and was released by Sega in PAL region only. it's also not a port of the game gear version released before it by Sega. it has a new plot and the game play has been tweak a bit. the graphics actually look more nicer than the NES Gaiden:

I've only played the first stage which isn't enough for me to form an opinion with.Breetai wrote:GSZX1337 wrote:Wow, that looks pretty cool. That's the best one! It was my favourite as a kid and still is today, easily.

Its definitely a good one, so look forward to it! How it stands up to the nes games is debatable, but its still good stuff.GSZX1337 wrote: Wow, that looks pretty cool. So far I like the music and story-telling (despite how brief and cheesy it may be- something about "DEATH ADDER ATTACKED AND STOLE THE NINE CRYSTALS THAT PROTECTED US. DEATH ADDER KILLED YOUR PARENTS" just tickles me).noiseredux wrote:Golden Axe Warrior
The graphics are fine in terms of individual tiles, but there's something iffy about how they come together. Like it's just a bit too obvious that it's a bunch of tiles put together, something which Nintendo has always been good at avoiding. It looks artificial compared to Legend of Zelda.
Despite how blatant the tiles are, the protagonist isn't locked to them so the the game plays very smoothly. Sure I'm fighting SMS Moblins, but I feel OK doing it, it feels natural. The controls are tight and combat is fun, though I find it kind of annoying having to line up my sword strike so much (it's just causing me to die is all).
I will be playing this one some more.
YS and Phantasy Star I will look in to after I have spent more time with Golden Axe Warrior, as all three of these are potentially really time consuming games. They both look like games I would enjoy, though.
Since at this stage I'm just playing roms and not collecting, I might as well just boot up MAME for these games, I'm afraid :\Opa Opa wrote:What I like the Master System for are the arcade conversions. I really enjoy Hang-On, OutRun, Space Harrier, After Burner, and, to a lesser extent, Altered Beast.
Despite being run on inferior hardware, I find the arcade games to be really fun. And SMS Hang-On is actually my favorite version of Hang-On.
I think the Sonic games are Genesis games (yes, I'm aware the first one is on SMS, too) with annoying music and an anthropomorphic cartoon hedgehog as a main character. Even though I was a Genesis kid and never owned a SNES (actually I still don't own a SNES), I have never liked Sonic.ZeroAX wrote:I think the Sonic games were pretty interesting.
I'm finding this game actually somewhat enjoyable, despite the fact that the controls are awful (seriously my character feels like he's wading through waist deep water) and the random way that the enemies spawn means I frequently find myself defenceless against a couple of hits before I can take them out (I was walking along a ledge and some flaming skulls spawned directly below me, and moved almost directly up- I got hit three times before they were even in a position for me to hit them and my character does not move fast enough to dodge properly).jfrost wrote:Kenseiden
Overall it's... OK, but I don't know if I would want to play it for much longer. Maybe it gets better as it goes, I don't know.
Jack the Ripper in a Castlevania clone? The music is pretty decent and atmospheric, but I can't help but notice this trend of enemies being faster and more maneuverable than the player character in all of these games. At least in this one the enemies don't randomly spawn like in Kenseidan, but I really have to be on the ball to nail them before they hit me. At least I can chalk it up to a challenge instead of shithouse luck, in this one.JoeAwesome wrote:Belmont family? Master of Darkness.
I'm also finding how precisely you have to hit the stairs to go up or down them kind of annoying, but overall I like this game. I think the theme of it really helps.
I'm not entirely sure what to make of this game. It plays like Contra and Zelda II had a baby, but with logic puzzles. I like the music but it looks hideous. It plays well enough, though. The controls are fine except when I'm trying to jump from platform to platform...Luke wrote:Zillion
...is it just me or do no SMS games handle jumping particularly well?
I'll play the occasional sports game outside of hockey games, and this may indeed be a good game. But I can't stand baseball.Reggie Jackson's baseball
This game seems incredibly mediocre. Controls are fine, actually, and it looks and sounds OK, but the gameplay is just flat and dull to me.Vigilante
This game gave me a headache.Galaxy Force
Not particularly a fan of any of these series :\prfsnl_gmr wrote:Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, and Double Dragon, R-Type
Hmmm... I should clarify. I know that beat'em ups and fighting games get lumped together a lot, but when I say "fighting games" I really do only mean fighting gamessheath wrote:Double Dragon and Black Belt ought to whet your whistle for Beat-em ups.
But yeah, I don't exactly turn to the NES for fighting games, either, haha. They made Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat in the UK, but I wouldn't worry about them.
This game is bizarre and lame and I think I really, really like it.Golvellius Valley of Doom
Will comment on more games as I play them

Whoa! That is some scandalous ass shit. I can forgive the rest (actually I'll probably forgive this too) but dang.Yancakes wrote:...The Sonic games... annoying music....
