lol, really?! Which of those terrible games do you consider good?
His point is that shovelware =/= bad game. A game can be terrible without necessarily being shovelware.
I was under the impression that shovelware means exactly that.
Thats kind of what I was hinting at by suggesting Shovelware is a silly term. I think most people have slightly different opinions on what it means to them so its impossible to use it even remotely objectively.

"Different opinions" or not, there IS a proper definition of the term (Mr. Popo's) and an improper one (BurningDoom's). We can THINK it means something else, but that doesn't make it so.

Shovelware is a colloquialism is it not? How does it have a definitive meaning in that case? (PS I do agree with Mr. Popo's definition)

Shovelware is games that are created quickly to turn a quick buck. Not much effort is put into them. On the other hand, you can have a AAA title that's a total POS.
This was my understanding of the term too.

The term comes from a history of "shoveling" a lot of games into one shoddy compilation of stuff (usually on a CD) in the 1990s. It also refers to "making games with a shovel" referring to the lack of care given to the production.

A list of old "shovelware": http://cd.textfiles.com/directory.html

Wikipedia definition:
Shovelware (sometimes also crapware or garbageware) is a derogatory computer jargon term that refers to software noted more for the quantity of what is included than for the quality or usefulness. The term is also used to refer to software that is ported from one computer platform or storage medium to another with little thought given to adapting it for use on the destination platform or medium, resulting in poor quality. The term is also sometimes used to refer to pre-installed software.

The metaphor implies that the creators showed little care for the original software or the resulting product, as if the new compilation or version had been indiscriminately created or ported with a shovel.

Well you learn something everyday. Most people I hear use the term shovelware use it the same way I thought it meant, crappy games.

But NES still has plenty of games under this description. I mean how many games did LJN rush out to the public? I know I was duped plenty of times as a kid by the cool licensed character art on the covers of LJN games, just to get home and play a game that was not only crappy but completely unpolished and full of glitches.

Shovelware are generally crappy games, but lots of crappy games aren't shovelware.

Sorry, but any of those games would have been played and enjoyed during the three day rental time just as any other.

What does rental time have to do with anything?
