Yes, the remake of Sid Meier's Pirates!. I was surprised it was so shallow in a sense, so if anyone knows about the diferences between the original, Pirates Gold and the remake can chime in, it would be greatly appreciated.

Dunno, the game just felt rushed, with very few art asssets and repeating animations for when you defeat enemy pirates.

I should also check out Cover Action, though Sid was very open about its pacing flaws.

I played the original on the Amiga and Gold, the remake on CD32. I think the CD32 is sort of exclusive, there are other versions of Gold around but not quite the same.
I think I also played a little bit with one of the PC versions where you had to fight with the mouse pressing on arrows (as I was used to the other type of combat, that sort of sucked ).

There is lot of stuff you can get into - finding relatives, hunting for treasure, rising in the ranks with one (or more?) nations... Hunting the silver or gold routes. I'm really surprised if you were able to exhaust all of it in one single play through. Also, the different periods you could play on those versions felt significantly different - e.g. playing in the early periods there are vast amounts of ocean with no settlements around, playing in the last period you really feel the pressure from lack of support from the nations and lots of Pirate Hunters etc. It really changes the strategies that are viable and so on.

JT's link made me remember this one:
Treasure Island Dizzy

Also technically Alone in the Dark has a bit of a Pirate theme.
