I greatly prefer a top loading mechanism to a slot loading one, but that price is wacky.

Are none of you guys aware that Sony is a in a fuckton of trouble financially? You're all whining about the price, but you must be aware that Sony has been selling PS3s at a massive loss for ages now. They need to start making some money if we're ever to see a PS4.

I wouldn't mind not seeing a PS4 actually...

And let's be honest. The thing would've sold like hotcakes had they made it fully backwards compatible again...

Doubtful. I bet most people that aren't posting on a retro gaming forum don't care about backwards compatibility anymore.

It's not 2007 anymore... PS2 isn't getting new releases, much less good ones. The numerous HD collections have eased the pain, and many people just aren't interested in playing PS2 at all anymore, period.

That's Sony's problem, not ours.

I'm not going to pay more for a piece of hardware from a company out of pity.

This...

You think they cared when Nintendo got fucked?... (PS1)

You think they cared when SEGA got fucked?... (Dreamcast)

You think they cared when LikSang got fucked?...

You think they cared when *insert company name* got fucked?...

Nope.

I'm not really impressed by the aesthetics (subjective, I know), or the lack of a price drop.

I've already got an MGS4 bundle phat PS3, and a Slim, so to be fair, it'd take a bit to sell me another PS3. But still, I just don't see much of a point to this for the consumer.

My assumption is that Sony is planning to expand the PS3 market (in terms of countries it officially sells them in) and desired a cheaper-to-produce model for doing that. Otherwise, a good holiday bundle, maybe a special edition color or three, or a price drop (or a combination of those things) would likely serve to move more units in the US/JP/EU markets.
You're all whining about the price, but you must be aware that Sony has been selling PS3s at a massive loss for ages now.
They haven't been selling them at a loss since mid 2010, and the Slim in general was never sold at a massive loss.

I'll nab one of these when they hit $150. I like not having a motorized disc loader/ejector. Fewer parts to break.

Am I disappointed? No. It's hard to be disappointed when you didn't have expectations to begin with.
