It is a good action movie. It is GREAT comedy/satire. (The same thing goes for Verhoeven's other great film, Starship Troopers.)Luke wrote:It's a pretty perfect action movie isn't it? If you enjoy watching unpleasant things, go see Irreversible.KillerJuan77 wrote: What the fuck?! I was expecting this to be Saw on a desert and what I got was one of the most unpleasant things I've ever sat through (And I've watched Salo, Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film). I'm kind of shocked at how it passed with an R rating.

If Popo thinks TROOPERS is an attempt at camp that fails he now has a tag team partner.

Starship Troopers is not an attempt at camp. It is a scathing satire. You will find some excellent criticism here:

I disliked the movie when it was released in 1997, but I appreciated it much more when I rewatched it nearly 15 years later.

Safe
Another mindless action flick but this time the plot is convoluted for the heck of it. A solid time waster.

It's a satire that falls victim of Poe's Law, and then it decided to appropriate the name and certain plot points from a fantastic book and completely miss the point of the original novel.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Starship Troopers is not an attempt at camp. Upon its release in 1997 - before we had lived through 11 years of the war on terror - the satire was almost indetectable, and many critics of the film viewed it as promoting fascism. Viewed today, the satire is very clear, and I expect that it was clear to its creator, Paul Verhoeven, who had experienced life in Nazi-occupied Holland. Moreover, I think that any efforts to make the satire explicit - as Stanley Kubrick did with character names in Dr. Strangelove - would detract from the film.MrPopo wrote:It's a satire that falls victim of Poe's Law, and then it decided to appropriate the name and certain plot points from a fantastic book and completely miss the point of the original novel.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Starship Troopers is not an attempt at camp. That said, I have not read the original novel, but I expect that you would be very disappointed if you were hoping for a faithful adaptation. Like Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining, however, the fact that the film deviates from its source material does not detract from its independent merits.
