I own Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance which includes the original versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, and have to say, they look pretty cool! In fact, I played MG for an hour or two and it was pretty fun, which tempts me to ditch MGS3 and just play the originals.
I also played MG2 for like, ten minutes, but not having a real manual probably led me to get lost pretty quickly and I didn't even beat the first stage. A shame, because the game looks and sounds awesome.
I've been considering printing a guide for MG and playing it again. It looks fun.
Have you played them? What did you think?
Looking for a cool game? Find it in my blog! Latest post: Often, games must be difficult http://eriktwice.com/
I've only ever played them very briefly, but they were both fun.
Metal Gear 2's control scheme seems to be identical to Metal Gear Solid's. Only difference is that MGS adds the first person view mode.
I had a friend who started playing through the series for the first time recently. He actually started with MG and MG2 before playing MGS1. He enjoyed them greatly and says it gives you a better perspective into what's going on in the game. I plan to try that myself one of these days.
NES Metal Gear really shouldn't even be mentioned alongside the MSX version. It's a pretty shoddy port.
I've played those two on the second disc of MGS3: Subsistence, which oh-so-thankfully included the MSX versions rather than the NES games. In fact, that's most of why I shelled out the $20 extra for Subsistence over Snake Eater.
Metal Gear was an OK game, and actually a bit impressive for its time. DOS here in America didn't get anything on that level until the '90s. It doesn't really feel like a Metal Gear game though, with its weak story and sparce dialogue.
Metal Gear 2 is a masterpiece, on MSX at least. The graphical and sound presentation is really quite impressive given how old the hardware it was running on. It could have been a SNES game. Anyway, MG2 actually feels like a Metal Gear game, with a real story, interesting characters, a large enclosed game world to run about in, and great music. You don't need to have played this one to understand what's going on in MGS, but if you have you get a little better idea what the deal with Gray Fox is, and who Snake, Campbell, and Big Boss are. Big Boss is a great "villain," and I put that in quotation marks because in true Metal Gear style he's one of those villains you sometimes sympathize with. At times I wished I could have joined up with him instead of fighting. If I could have any MG game totally remade for PS3, it'd be this one. Come to think of it, that would make a great PS4 launch title.

someone should try to remember that Metal Gear would probably be a good choice for a Together Retro title. Think about it: it's part of a series that we're all pretty familiar with, yet most of us probably have overlooked this original game. Add to that how easily accessible it now is, with ports to MSX2, NES, PC MS-DOS, Commodore 64, Mobile Phone, PlayStation 2, Virtual Console, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Vita.
I would choose MG2 for a TR, since it's significantly more fun than the original, but you're right. I'll try to remember this when it's time to nominate games for the 2013 calendar.

Metal Gear 2 is one of my favorite Metal Gear games period and a favorite 16-bit game. The first one is good but MG 2 is legendary. It really feels like you're playing a full fledged Metal Gear game in every way, I'd rank it above some of the 3D ones. If it was ported to the SNES back in the day I have no doubts that it would have been very popular and held in as high regard as some of the other classics on the system (Metroid, Zelda, FF). I really wish I had played these games before playing MGS for the first time, would have definitely doubled the entertainment factor.

It can hardly be considered a port even. It uses the same resources and similar level design at times, that's about it. Even the story is out of whack and made senseless. The game isn't tied to Kojima or the staff that developed the original Metal Gear either. It's basically what Dracula X is to Rondo of Blood.
I had been feeling bad about picking up the metal gear HD collection when it released and only playing it for only about 20 minutes. Well I saw this thread earlier today and decided to throw it in after work and the first thing I did was load up metal gear 2.
I'm liking the game a lot so far. I just beat the first boss and have to follow some guy though the jungle. The music in this game is just amazing and the story so far pretty cool. I do wish the game had more cut scenes though
I just started playing peace walker and the game is pretty awesome too.
Now I feel bad for letting the game sit on my shelf for so long...
