Sealed PS1 system price check!
Hey guys, just wondering if I can get some advice. There is a craigslist ad near my location for a brand new, sealed PS1 console. The guy is asking 180 for it. Is this reasonable? I see on Ebay there is a VGA graded PS1 for 900, but I'm sure that's shameless price gouging. The guy has pics and everything looks mint and legit. What do you guys think?

I suppose it depends on what model PS1, and what your intention is -- to rip it open and enjoy it, or leave it sitting on your shelf.
I have a friend who bought a brand-new sealed in the box SNES last year. A few months ago, he decided he was going to open it up and play it -- only to discover that there wasn't actually a SNES in the box, but beanbag weights instead.
There's so many cheats out there, I'd have to be a) pretty damn sure and b) want it enough to bother verifying it.

Wow man, that's actually heart-breaking. Do you know how much he paid for it? I'm a pretty big PS1 collector, so I would be buying it to display only.

To me, $180 seems pretty fair (especially if it's an earlier model) considering it wasn't that long ago you could still buy a PSOne in stores. As long as you can verify it's legitimate and you've got the cash, go for it -- you can always try offering a lower price first to get yourself a bargain. You never know with people.
My buddy paid $400 for his sealed "SNES". I told him next time do your deal where you have access to an x-ray machine.

As a fellow collector I shouldn't laugh at things like that, but I can't help itirixith wrote:I

man, that is FUCKED UP. that is mind-boggling that someone would go to such great lengths to rip someone off within such a specific, niche community of buyers.

This is why I don't deal in sealed stuff..irixith wrote:I have a friend who bought a brand-new sealed in the box SNES last year. A few months ago, he decided he was going to open it up and play it -- only to discover that there wasn't actually a SNES in the box, but beanbag weights instead.
Hope you find one at a fair price and a reputable seller, seems like everyone is trying to make a quick buck on gamers since collecting it getting expensive.

If it is a PSone, then $180 is really high. If it is an older model, it is still high, but could be worth it if you are buying to own it yourself.
I have purchased two sealed PlayStations in the past year. Each were under $100 from Ebay. I bought a PSone and a SCPH-9001.
