Hey guys.
I've been experimenting with my Game Boy Camera lately, and I decided to try duplicating a preexisting video with it to see what the resulting grayscale animations would look like. I chose Nathan Barnatt's "Chuggin Gigabytes" as my subject matter, because I felt the song's lyrical content really fit the spirit of the experiment. Also, it had a short running time.
I just finished it last week. Chug away.
I tried a few different ways of going about this (e.g. recording input from a GameCube Game Boy Player), but the crispest method involved re-shooting the original footage frame-by-frame, importing the saved GBC images into my computer with a Mad Catz Game Boy to PC Camera Link Cable, and putting them all together with a more modern video editing program.
I sent Nathan a message asking for his permission to make this public, but I haven't heard back yet. I'm unlocking it in the hopes that there won't be a problem. If there is one, though, I hope he won't be shy about asking me to take it down.

Hah, that's so cool! I started work on one of his videos doing the exact same thing when he was holding the 4-bright-buttons remix contest.

I remember looking around Racketboy and seeing a picture of your setup for that project somewhere. Did you finish?Anapan wrote:Hah, that's so cool! I started work on one of his videos doing the exact same thing when he was holding the 4-bright-buttons remix contest.
You were using a Super Game Boy, right? What was your capture method like?

You had a gameboy camera in a super gameboy pointing at a laptop while another computer recorded it. Right?

Oh, I didn't realize you guys asked about my gb camera setup - Here's the thread:

Sadly, I haven't touched the project since, but I've been wanting to recreate it for a while, so probably this winter I'll set it up again and doccument it all properly.

It's so interesting how you went about it in a totally different way, Anapan. I originally started in a similar way to you, using my GBCamera in my GameCube GBPlayer, but there was quality loss through the composite connection. That, and when I slowed the original video down to allow the GBCamera to display every frame in its preview mode as it recorded, the GBCamera would manually adjust the brightness/contrast to a certain extent as it went, making for slow builds or declines in one of the other after jump cuts. Were you doing yours in the preview field and just letting it run, or were you doing it shot-by-shot too?
Sorry if this was all explained in your more detailed description and it's just not sinking in.
I know I'm still not sure about one thing though: were you planning to keep the Super Game Boy border around your finished product?

Re: Chuggin Gigabytes via Game Boy Camera
I was just playing the video at 9 fps and left the preview window on. I was getting page tearing because of the realtime preview that didn't seem so noticeable after playing it back at normal speed. I was able to minimize the intensity adjustments by lowering the brightness of my lcd but they were still there. I intended to keep the SGB logo since I retracked the tune in LSDJ and having 3 gameboy products used in it seemed cooler

Do you have a link to your finished composition? That's awesome that you re-did the song! So impressed!Anapan wrote: I intended to keep the SGB logo since I retracked the tune in LSDJ and having 3 gameboy products used in it seemed cooler

Thanks. I'm really impressed with your video too. No, I don't think I even recorded it fully. It kept going out of sync very soon after the song started and I couldn't figure out why. It sould still be on my flashcart tho. I got through a few of the lyrics on my other cart using LSDJ's voice synthesizer too. I'm out of town working, but I'll try to find it when I get home.
