Steam Greenlight: Your picks?

Post by J T »

Being featured on Steam can mean a lot for an indie dev's success. I like to vote up games on Greenlight that I have already found enjoyable or just sound like cool concepts. Here's a few of my picks. What are yours?

The Stanley Parable: HD Remix:
The original was a tongue-in-cheek head trip of a game. Looking forward to the sequel.

Qasir al-Wasat: A Night In Between:
I picked this up from Indievania recently. It's a fantastic stealth adventure game. It's like Metal Gear, only if it were reinterpreted through a Persian version of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I don't know why more people aren't talking about this. Maybe because they can't remember the name.

Fract OSC:
The original free version of Fract can be found in my free PC games thread (see signature). This is the updated version. It's a cool adventure game that fuses synthesizer music puzzles with trippy cubist visuals.

Heaven Variant:
I haven't played this one, but it looks like Einhander. Sold.

Escape Goat:
This is one of my favorite indie titles of 2012. It's basically a love letter to the underappreciated classic Solomon's Key... with goats.

Oniken:
This is an awesome homage to NES era games like Ninja Gaiden and Vice: Project Doom. Very fun and challenging.

Contrast:
Haven't played this one yet, but I love the concept of using your shadow.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch:
The first Octodad had an oddball sense of humor and actually made the gameplay part of the joke. It's a memorable game. The sequel looks to carry on the good times.

The Real Texas:
It's a Zelda game with cowboys and a quirky sense of humor.

Incredipede:
A physics puzzler with weird biology that looks like a bizarre anatomy book done in wood carving.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller:
This comes from the devs that released A Silver Lining, the fan-made King's Quest sequel.

Cloudbuilt:
This is a stylized 3rd person parkour game. Sort of like what Mirror's Edge would be if it wasn't in the first person and looked more like Sin & Punishment.

TRIP:
This is an art project, less of a game. I dig the visuals. It's the same person that did THAT mod.

Gray Matter:
This is the latest adventure game to be penned by Jane Jensen, author of the beloved Gabriel Knight series.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge:
I've never played this, but it did very well on the Nintendo DS.

Forget Me Not Annie:
This is also in my free games thread. It's a creepy survival-horror, puzzle game. You have a big bear that you can teleport and switch places with.

Dramagame:
I learned about this one via Greenlight, but the concept of doing online improv acting sounds a lot like Improviso, which I featured in my free games thread, so this could also be cool. I'd like to see more improv games.

Slender: Source:
Slender is also in my free games thread. This is the Source update. I think it's by a different dev, but this also has a "no weapons" policy that I like to see in my horror games.

La Mulana
This is a doujin game that has made it's way to the State with an English translation. It's been very popular, but has already been turned down from Steam and Nintendo in the past. The groundswell of support for this little metroidvania-that-could is suggesting that this game will makes its way onto both, however. You can find the free version in my free games thread.

By the way, the first 10 games that have been greenlit are up (see link).

Of these, I had voted for Routine, Dream, and McPixel. I was going to vote for Black Mesa as well, but then it got greenlit.

Enola - I got a code from the dev since it's still on Alpha but it's pretty awesome and it definetely haves some potential.
Afterfall Insanity: Extended Edition - I've heard mixed stuff about this one but it looks pretty fun and the demo was entertaining.
Postal 2 - One of my guilty pleasures.
Shantae: Risky's Revenge - One of the best DSi-Ware titles and a great sequel to the Game Boy Color's cult classic.
The Last Phoenix - It's like Flower with giant birds fighting each other, now that's a great concept.
Gray Matter - I've wanted to play this a long time ago.
Dead Trigger - This one is extremely fun in phones and they are promising DX11 support for the PC version so... why not?!
3079 - A pretty cool FPS/RPG.
Higurashi: When They Cry - One of the best visual novels I've ever played.
Interstellar Marines - This one looks amazing and it apparently haves some RPG elements so that's a plus.
Contrast - It's a bit similar to Lost In Shadow only with more variety. That's a GOOD thing.
Project Giana - This one seems to be absolutely incredible. It looks fun, it's fairly innovative and the visuals are incredible.
Broforce - A pretty funny shooter.
HEAVEN VARIANT - It looks like a fun SHMUP and apparently there's even melee and strategic shooting.
99 Levels To Hell - A pretty challenging plattformer with randomized levels.
Dark Ocean - A survival horror game that takes place on a ship. It sounds pretty cool and it's free!

According to the new Steam Subscriber Agreement, if you don't sign it within 30 days of reading it and have not cancelled your account in that time, then you have agreed to it.

JT, Gray Matter was already released, this Greenlight is just to get it on Steam.

I know a lot of these games have already been released. I own a lot of the picks I put up already. I don't really care about them being on Steam personally, as I would rather own a DRM free copy. I know the developers care about their games being on Steam though because it greatly increases their amount of exposure. That's why I vote.

Cradle

The trailers make me think that this one is going to be something special. I'm not sure what it is, but the desolate future/primitive world of Cradle seems very tangible and lovely.

Cradle looks cool. I wonder how long Greenlighting some of these is gonna take? Seems like I haven't seen one with over 3 or 4% approval yet.
