Thanks guys. I'm giving Brian (guitar/vox) 2 more weeks, just because I liked playing with them. He said he needed "a couple weeks to step away." That was a week from this past Sunday. So I'm gonna give him 3 weeks total. After that, I'm just not gonna move forward. I've already put out an ad and I've been contacted by one band, but I'm not super interested in playing their music, though I do like their sound.
Eh, such is life.

Not that you asked, but playing is better than not playing. At the very least you make some friends, and who knows right?

what are you trying to play? i gathered some kind of punk but that's pretty broad.indecks wrote:Thanks guys. I'm giving Brian (guitar/vox) 2 more weeks, just because I liked playing with them. I think I've narrowed it down to either Old School Punk, like Ramones, Misfits, Germs and maybe progressing into New Old School (if there is such a term) punk like Queers, Lillingtons, Huntingtons, etc.
Or, Post Metal like ISIS, Envy, Pelican, Constants, Disappearer, etc.
I was in a "metal" band before and the music that the guys wrote was very repetitive and (I know I sound like a prima donna but dont mean to) kind of boring to play. I don't mean in a challenging way as if I were 'too good', though. That's totally not the case. It was just that I didn't have fun playing that type of metal, and this band that recently contacted me play stuff that's VERY similar to what my old band was.
Just reading that previous paragraph to myself makes me sound like such a cock, but I dont mean to be. The speed of old school punk interests me more than anything. What's crazy about it is that punk rock is extremely repetitive too, lol. But I think I fit better the energy in punk rock, more than anything. At least now. Who knows, maybe if I get good in the future I'll be more interested in jazz drumming or something. But for now - speed, and energy are what I want to focus on.
Re: proud of myself: I just joined a band.
if you would have said Envy without the rest of those bands, i'd probably be into it
i don't really care for the new slow/proggy Envy as much as i like the early, screamy/chaotic Envy.
but power to you! good luck getting the band off the ground

Hm. I'm no longer in a band.
I guess after a single song writing session, they've decided that they are in too new of a direction so they need to try out drummers. And they were gracious enough to offer me a new audition.
My response:
Hey thanks anyway, good luck w the new direction.

being in bands with dudes like that never works out. "auditioning" for a band always seemed really weird to me for some reason.indecks wrote:Hm. I'm no longer in a band.

Well, looking back on everything - I think I know why the bassist decided to move on. The two guitarists aren't sure of what they want and kept trying to change things.
Maybe I'll call up the bassist and see if he wants to find two more guitarists.
What's funny though is that the guy described his new sound as a mix between "Agent Orange and Joy Division, mixed with a little Misfits."
Ah ok. SO YOU MEAN PUNK ROCK?

Good idea.
I'm also for three piece punk bands, so perhaps one guitarist will do.
Best of luck.
Re: proud of myself: I just joined a band.
I did this in college with some dude who lived a few states away. we used a drum machine, because I had no access to a drumset.aaron wrote:
or if someone who plays drums wanted to lay down some drum tracks, i'll write some guitar parts to go over it. just send me the mixed down WAVs.
We could make a Racketboy band if everyone contributed something!
//edit
I've always thought that "going in a new direction" line was BS. Just play what you like and each member contributes their own style. That's how you maintain interesting music in long standing genres. When you try to emulate things, it gets stale and boring reeeeeaaaaaly quickly.
