Dolmexica-Engine (open source Dreamcast fighter devkit)

Post by noiseredux »

I don't know if anyone else has been following this, but this guy called CaptainDreamcast has been working really hard on his Dolmexica Engine. Sort of like OpenBOR, this is a new open-source engine that allows you to create your own 2D fighting game for Dreamcast. I haven't mucked around with it myself, but I find the whole thing really exciting. Thinking about all the BOR mods that flooded the DC, it would be great to see new 2D fighters being created as well.

What's great is that CaptainDC is remaining really active in the development of this engine. He keeps updating the project and providing new guides, and has been very open to answering questions from devs who are trying to work with the engine.

Dolmexica's creator has also put out a WIP version of game he created using the engine called... Street Fighter Vs Mortal Kombat.

Anyway, seems really exciting to me like I said. I don't know if I'll ever create anything with it myself, as my ambition is often overshadowed by lack of talent when it comes to things like this. But I may just try to follow some of the guides just to see how it all works from a hobbiest perspective.

I don't know much about MUGEN... why would that be bad?

MUGEN is basically a giant mess that's ultimately not really good for much of anything because balancing a fighter is more work than most people are willing to try and put in.

Everyone just creates characters and everyone else just throws those characters into their 11,000 character dream unbalanced crazy nightmare fighting game.

'course i'm not really all that impressed by most BoR mods and whatnot, so maybe it's just me.

gotcha. Well yes, ultimately this is just a tool. And the resulting games will depend an awful lot on talent and EFFORT of the creators. Certainly there are many poorly-made and lazy BOR mods out there. I'll agree with you there. But there are also some good and interesting ones. So if even only a handful of solid games result from this new tool, then I'm happy it exists.

This!

Hopefully though, out of a bunch of crap, maybe one good thing can come out of this engine. Here's hoping.
