Together Retro: Super Mario Bros 2 / Doki Doki Panic
Re: Together Retro: Super Mario Bros 2 / Doki Doki Panic
Played for a bit today, I found that I'm not too good with any character but Mario.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

BTW, is there anything special that happens if you get all the coins or Yoshi eggs? I don't think I'll be getting all the eggs, but I might go for the coins (I'm only missing completion from two levels) if there's something extra.

I got all the coins and I hope to be starting the "challenge" mode today. I'll report on what full completion gets.Nemoide wrote:BTW, is there anything special that happens if you get all the coins or Yoshi eggs? Started playing the NES version this evening. Went through the first three worlds with relative ease, aside from somehow dying while climbing a ladder in level 3-2 and a mis-timed jump in level 3-3.

Re: Together Retro: Super Mario Bros 2 / Doki Doki Panic
I am not playing through the game this month, but I have played through SMB2 dozens of times. It is so strange, so unique, and probably my favorite Mario game. (Although...Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D Land are very high up there too...) To me, it epitomizes the risks that developers would take back in the early days of video games. Nintendo had a tremendous hit with Super Mario Bros., but instead of simply rehashing the first game, they crafted a completely new experience (for the U.S. audience at least). They did the same thing with the legend of Zelda, and not knowing what to expect from franchise sequels - as well as the relatively long time between them - made video games so exciting back then.
We - unfortunately - do not see that sort of innovation today for a variety of reasons. Nonetheless, when Nintendo announced New Super Mario Bros. 2, that we would at least get a rehash of Super Mario Bros. 2. When we received yet another good - but standard - Mario Bros. game, I was quite disappointed (i.e., how long must I wait for a rematch with Wart and Mouser?).

18/40 on the Challenge with 1-1 to 3-3 cleared. Nice way to incorporate a bit more gameplay -- but be warned that there is only one mushroom per stage for a total of 3 hits (whichever one is left is up to you to find), and if you die, you lose the eggs and must start OVER for that stage.
I'm almost exclusively using Toad as a result. for his run speed and pick up speed (comes in handy on bosses!)

Now at 30/40 -- 5-2 and 5-3 were absolutely brutal to get the eggs and NOT DIE in. Looking forward to 6-2 and 7-2 and their stage layouts!

I guess it's time for me to dust off my good ol' NES and get to beating this game. I remember only getting a few levels in last time I played.

It took me a couple of tries at 7-2, but I can say that this game is finally complete!
At 100% coins and 40/40, I don't see anything all that different (except for this screen and the title screen), but I can say it was a perfect reason for me to return to such a great game. As frustrating as it was, and can be even still to this very day, I am so glad I was able to relive some 20 year old memories.

Finished the NES version of SMB2 this afternoon. Had a few tough times, specifically in 5-3 where it got a little "rocky" against Clawgrip. Lost a few lives in 7-2, but that was mostly due to careless errors.
