It's called an investment. You know, a creative risk. All the stats might show that specific genres sell the most, but it's only the ones who take risks and break new ground that will reap the biggest rewards.

Sure till now platform puzzlers seemed like a "big" thing for indie games. But then Minecraft comes out of nowhere and becomes huuuuuuuuuuuge.

J T wrote: I'm not opposed to Greenlight if it is done in tandem with experts that know how to scout good games based on a strategy of seeking out innovation. My point is simply that if there is not someone with an eye for innovation on their team, then indie games are going to be valued based on popular opinion. Popular opinion is already what decides how AAA games are made and the populous doesn't tend to side with innnovation in most cases.
I'm mostly on JT's side of things with this. I don't have much trust on popular opinion for spotting innovation, and as he wrote in the earlier post Indies are playing an extremely important role in innovation.

I liked the lasagna metaphor and it reminds me a bit of science and engineering. This is a rough way of saying it, but sort of like this: Engineering goes towards making better candles, but you need some science to get from there to light bulbs (and then engineering to make better light bulbs).

Yeah, so?

You are trying to give Valve business advice or you're trying to argue, with J T, that Greenlight is not a good validation process?

If the former, I think Valve is doing okay, thank you very much. If the latter, I repeat, there must be some metric if the game is going to perform at least reasonably on the Steam store. If not, it's a waste of screen space. No wonder they only carry indie titles that are mostly guaranteed to sell. Valve only looks at your game as a potential Steam product if you have already built a sizeable fanbase.

There's no running away from that.

And a "popularity contest" is better than what we had before. Incredipede developer says so himself, after criticizing the model:
While Colin Northway is using Steam Greenlight for Incredipede, he's concerned that the service may devolve into a popularity contest which only hurts developers who aren't aiming for me-too games.

"The skills required to make good games are very different from the skills required to dominate a 'vote for my game' contest, so I'm worried good games will be lost in the shuffle," he notes.

"On the other hand, look at how many games are on Greenlight. That's how many games Valve used to get in its inbox every day. So in a choice between 'lost in the shuffle' and 'I don't have time to even open the email containing your trailer', I guess I'll take Greenlight," says Northway.

To be fair... this does allow ACTUAL developers to be featured without any troll or joke games but this is indie gaming and most of the time those 100 dollars could be used for the development or to eat. It's a double edged blade but I'm not entirely against it.

Now... we need to get rid of the trolls that vote for the games. There's this game called 3079 that's basically Fallout + some Minecraft elements and most people just said "THIS IS A MINECRAFT RIP-OFF. DOWN VOTED", even though it's more of a FPSRPG and it's pretty awesome too. The same with Higurashi with people saying "IT LOOKS AWFUL" and "LOL JAPANESE CRAP".

That will die down eventually. Sadly that will probably take three months.

And thanks for the heads up on 3079. Im going to keep an eye on that one.
