Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar - NES or DOS?

Post by Opa Opa »

'Sup guys.

I'd like to play Ultima IV. I already have the GOG version because it's free; but I like to play my RPG's on consoles or handhelds because I can't get very comfortable sitting at a computer desk.

Has anyone played the NES version and how does it compare to the PC version?

Any other thoughts or comments would be cool, too.

Thanks.

Neither are really ideal, but I personally would lean towards DOS. I haven't actually played the NES version but I'm under the impression that it's basically a remake designed for a Japanese audience that then got translated to English. If nothing else, I know it looks really different. The DOS version is pretty close to the original Apple II version but without music.

I'd recommend the Sega Master System version as the ideal non-computer version. But really, I don't think there's anything wrong with the NES version - it's just different.

The PC version was superior, but I actually really liked Ultima IV on NES. It feels like a different game, because it does look different. If you can find it cheap I'd recommend picking up the NES version.

All the Ultima games feel completely different on console from their PC counterparts. I actually preferred Ultima VII on SNES to the PC version (hides from the incoming onslaught of attacks), which was inferior to the PC version in numerous ways, but was also designed differently to compensate.
Huge RPG fan.

As far as I know the NES version lacks a lot of things the computer versions has (but it does look nicer, but there are graphical updates for the PC version available). That generally applies to all console versions of Ultima, although I've heard that the Master System version is a lot more true to the original than the NES version. The commodore 64 version is better than the original DOS version, but not counting the Japanese FM Towns, Amiga and Atari ST versions are the most high quality as far as I know. You can play both C64 and Amiga with emulators, so it doesn't really differ from playing the game with DOSBox like you would do if you downloaded the game for free from Good old Games. Unless you are playing it via ultima collection compliation disc.
