I may be a bit biased though, since I'm from the UK and grew up knowing the PAL cases.
I have not broken mine, but can see how easily it can crack. Opening the cover has to be done gently, both corners tend to grab. Usually when one corner releases, the other corner is still grabbing causing stress at the hinge from the slight twist.

Maybe I'll take a jewelers file to free up the catches at those corners.

All PAL cases are the same. They all have the blue piece in the middle, and they all have loose back inserts. Just straighten the spine so it's level with the rest of the back insert -180 degrees- then put it back in the back of the case and let it push itself back to its original 90 degree angle. Be careful when closing the back part afterwards or you'll bend the spine inwards again. It's a little tricky, but you'll manage...

Protip: NEVER let someone else open your PAL Dreamcast jewel cases...

Oh yeah definitely. Also, don't lend your games to anyone else. They'll almost certainly come back cracked in some way :P

I don't know though... Maybe it's just because I've always known the PAL cases till years later when I started getting into imports, so it's sort of naturally embedded inside me without me knowing, but I just treat them like any of my other games cases. I never, that I know of, spend my time opening the cases carefully thinking "careful, careful, must not break this, be gentle". I mean, I can just about understand what CRTGAMER is saying, but really? Seems like over thinking things a little.

That said, if you drop the cases accidentally on the floor, yes, they will break and discs will fly/roll everywhere. I found that out the hard way

You can see the back insert is hanging loosely in the back part of the case...
