Is my Shenmue II case missing something?

Post by jay_red »

Hey guys, just picked up Shenmue II again after having to sell my previous copy, and something seems off about the spine/back label. It may be fine, but I dont remember my previous copy doing this, but at the same time I dont remember if it was any different on the inside.

See here, how when its closed, the spine is folded back a little?

When you open it, there is nothing in place other than the manual to hold that piece of paper:

You can see here that the insert just sits here loose (both cases are like this) and there is nothing to keep the spine straight:

If someone could let me know, or check their copy that would be awesome. I just dont recall my other copy looking like that, or having the insert loose, but I could be wrong.

I have two copies of that game. Both are exactly like that.
Nothing to worry about. Probably just the PAL way of packaging Dreamcast games.

Usually they are assembled in much the same way as jewel cases, with the piece that holds the disc snapping into the back piece of plastic. However Shenmue has 2 Discs and they were obviously too cheap to make a new mold for it.

Yeah but IIRC, Shenmue had 3 discs for the game and 1 for something web related or etc BS. So why not just use the same case as Shenmue 1? :? Unless it wasn't released in PAL which I don't know...

Mine are the same way too, no holder to keep the back cover in check. I have a couple other DC PAL releases; Record Of Lodoss War and Planet Ring both have the same design with the loose rear cover. Weird there is no clips as in the front side. Every time I open the cover, I cringe at cracking it, the way it grabs. So far all three games have held up.

A side question, do all PAL Dreamcast games have the blue plastic in the middle?

@CRT

Yep, every Dreamcast game I own has the blue bit.

The PAL Dreamcast games are in competition with the PAL Saturn games for the title of worst game packaging ever. They just shatter at the slightest knock.

The Saturn cases are probably worse though, they don't even fulfill the task of holding the game and manual they're designed to do.

Thanks.

The original PS1 long plastic cases and the older Japan PS1 thick cases are also terrible. A few of my long cases I bought have cracked hinges.

I open the PAL DC games with extra care. I really like the blue center for appearance, hate it for the fragility and space robbing storage.

My PAL Shenmue II is just like yours, so no issues. Except mine has 2 of the plastic rings that hold the discs in place nearly snapped off, so I have to be REALLY careful when handling it lest the loose discs get scratched up.

Thanks for the replies, it just seemed weird that the insert was loose like that, maybe they couldnt do anything else because of that huge ass manual shoved into both cases. I personally liked the look of the PAL cases over the standard jewel cases we have, but the fragility of them is no good.

I always really liked the PAL Dreamcast cases and easily prefer them to the blander standard jewel cases that North America, Japan and other countries had. Well, I preferred them aesthetically. Obviously, design wise, yes they are a little fragile. That said, I have to ask what people do to break them so easily. I've rarely had any issues with my cases becoming broken. The only issue I've come across has been buying the games second hand... Since it seems everyone else breaks them :P

I may be a bit biased though, since I'm from the UK and grew up knowing the PAL cases.
