Is this cheating?

Post by ElkinFencer10 »

I know this is a really subjective question given that everyone has different preferences with his or her collection (Greatest Hits vs original release, CIB vs disc only, etc.), but I wanted some opinions nonetheless.

I REALLY want Panzer Dragoon Saga, but being a college kid, I just don't have the money to dish out for that. Unfortunately, I can't read Japanese, either. Since I want every game I play to be in my collection, I've been entertaining the idea of buying the Japanese version of the game since it costs about a tenth of what the American version does to have it in my collection and burning to discs backups of the North American release for me actually to play. I know ultimately it's up to me what does and does not have a legitimate place in my collection, but I want the opinions of fellow collectors. Does the monetary factor justify bending the "ethics" of collecting, or do more people think this idea should be just out of the question?

I'll just say that you aren't "collecting" the US version of the game in any way if you buy the Japanese version and then play a burn of the English game.

Yeah, and the only reason that I'm even considering it is that I don't really care about different "versions" in my collections; I would only, for example, consider the Japanese version to be part of my collection.

I understand your problem, so if you want to waste money on the Japanese version and play a burn of the American version, just burn the American one, save the money, buy it later on when you have the money, and be a happy spud with an extra 30 bucks in your pocket.

You can get the JP version very cheaply. How cheap online I dunno but in Japan, $5 ~15 depending where you look.

Ethics? Either way the original developer isn't getting paid so I wouldn't fret over whatever you decide to do. If Sega re-releases it, then you may want to support them for that... But I highly doubt that will happen.

i own the american version but i bought the japanese version just because i love the art in it ( and it was $20) but i ended up burning a copy to play so i wouldnt scuff up the box, infact most of my saturn collection just sits on my shelf unplayed because i rather play my backup copies to avoid ware and tear on those fragile ass boxes. no shame in it.

When I saw the title of this topic I thought it would be about someone's love life

Also, lol just burn a copy of the game already. I think hardly anyone tracks which computer downloads 15-20 year old games that aren't being resold via modern means.

PAL Saturn boxes ftw. Is your Saturn modded? Ever since I came to this forum, I've been increasingly intrested in playing Panzer Dragoon Saga. I never heard any one say a word about but here it's a legendary game among Sega enthusiasts. I dont want to put 100+ UK pounds/200+ US Dollars in it just to find out that I don't like the it, but from what I've heard Saturn emulation doesn't work quite well yet so I would like to try playing the game with burned discs and then see if it's a gem worth investing in.

Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

trust me you won't regret it, mod your saturn its extremely easy to do as long as you have a model 2 saturn (round buttons). Also from what i heard is that saturn emulation has gotten pretty damn good lately with the SSF emulator i only tried a handful of games guardian heroes and panzer dragoon saga were the first i tested with SSF and aside from a couple brief audio glitches it was very playable so you might want to try that first if you dont feel comfortable with soldering. if you do decide to mod your saturn this is the video i used to learn how to do it
