The Super Mario World 2 curse

Post by The_Indigo_Effect »

I’m having a bit of a dilemma. Today I received Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island in the mail; it was an ebay purchase. There is a slight problem at the file selection screen; the screen appears to be spliced into a kind of grid, but the big problem arises in level 1-3. After I activate the help block by slamming Yoshi's head into it, the entire upper portion of the screen turns into, as best I can describe, a solid column of bent, gray pipes. What makes this incredible is that this is not the first time that this has happened. In fact, this is the third copy I’ve purchased on ebay that has reacted this way. All my other snes games work without any problems. My two-part question is thus: why do you suppose these cartridges reacted this way, and where can I buy a copy of Super Mario World 2 that is in working order? I know Super Mario World 2 utilized the Super FX 2 chip, but I don't know if that has anything to with its performance; the cartridge's construction is unique to any other snes game that I own. I’d appreciate if anyone could solve this mystery. Thanks.

Maybe the problem is your system. Have you tried the game on another snes system?

Did you blow into/clean out the cart?
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

C'mon, we've now known for a long time that's not good for carts despite working. ;)

The first thing I'd do is clean your cart out with some q-tips and rubbing alcohol (or ceramic stove cleaner if you're hardcore) and try it again. You may need also need to clean or replace the 72 pin inside you're NES.

If that doesn't work, test it on another system if possible. Or pick up another copy of the game, I can usually find them for 2 or 3 bucks around town.

Also....
It's also possible the springs or latch on you're system are worn out. That griding/line stuff happens alot when the cart tray moves. Try sliding another game in the cart slot on top of the other inserted game. If that fixes it, it's probably the latch or springs. You may have to open it up and do some repairs if thats the case.

the problem probably isn't the cartridge, although you should always clean it with q-tips. find a different snes to try the game on.

Thanks for the advice. I do use ceramic stove cleaner to clean my games, so I'm guessing that the SNES is my problem. Thanks for your help.

If you have a model 2 SNES from the U.S. then there's a chance you have a fake system. I found a page on this a while back talking about these almost exact look alikes, which may have compatibillity problems.

The snes I own is of the original, U.S. model, but your information is news to me. I appreciate your help.
