Descent Control Scheme

Post by philipofmacedon »

Hey guys,

I picked up a copy of the original PC descent the other day. I'm still trying to devise a good control scheme for it. I wonder if anyone else remembers playing this and what you used for controls? A joystick + strafing on the keyboard perhaps?

I used A and Z on the keyboard for Forward/Back, and of course 1-0 for weapons, but I had a $20 Thrustmaster FCS stick to control everything else. The stick had a hat on it which would let you strafe, and float straight up, or straight down.

What a great game. Had some awesome dogfights over the phone.

I used keyboard only, and probably the default controls or close to the default. I probably needed a good bit of adaptation time, but I had some experience with gaming on keyboards already.

I use a BlueTooth trackball with 3 buttons and a scroll wheel, and this joystick

Trackball (left hand)
Trackball X axis: Slide Left/Right
Trackball Y axis: Slide Up/Down
Scroll Wheel: Forward/Backward
Main Click: Forward
Secondary Click: Backward
3rd (middle) Click: Afterburner

Joystick (right hand)
Joystick X Axis: Roll
Joystick Y Axis: Pitch
Twist Stick: Yaw
Trigger: Fire Primary Weapon
Thumb Button: Fire Secondary Weapon
Button 3: Drop Bomb
Button 4: Cycle Bomb
Button 5: Cycle Primary
Button 6: Cycle Secondary
Button 7: Energy-Shield Converter
Hat-switch Left: Fire Flare
Hat-switch Right: Toggle Headlamp
Hat-switch Up: Map View
Hat-switch Down: Rear View

This control arrangement means that ALL my controls for maneuvering the ship are ANALOG which lets me have a much more precise degree of control of my flight.
