Thanks to SamuraiMega's thread I just remembered to check out videos of the panels in Quakecon 2012 and one them in particular is very intresting: QuakeCon 2012 Panel - Looking Back at Looking Glass
It has people who worked for Looking Glass studios who are now working in Bethesda, Valve and other respected studios talking about topics such as game design philosophy, the history of Looking Glass and what it was like to work there and innovation&cost of production in modern video games. One of the questions the interviewer asks is do the guys think that strive for photorealism in modern game is holding back innovations in game design. They have all worked on many of the best and most influental FPS and FPS hybrid games of all time such as Thief 1&2, Terra Nova, System Shock 1&2, Half Life 2, Half Life 2 episode 1&2, Fallout 3, Deus Ex and also on games such as Dishonored and Skyrim. The most interesting part is the talk about how games can tell a story to the player with out breaking the immersion with cutscenes, long conversations and walls of text by using envrionmental storytelling and other similiar methods. It's fascinating, especially if you enjoy games like System Shock, Thief, Half Life, Dead Space, Portal and Bioshock.

Looking Glass games are beyond games, they're an experience.... art.
Yeah this is gonna be a great watch I'm sure.

I enjoyed watching this, thanks. The number of times the host said "like" was very grating. I also could have done without the repeated mention of Dishonored.
Selling half my NES/SNES/PS1 collection (ending Dec 1):

I felt the same way about Dishonored - it felt like advertising. But the host is working on that game and it obivously tries (and hopefully will be) to be a spiritual succesor to Looking Glass games and Deus Ex so no wonder. Atleast it got me intrested in the game, I only had heard it's name like 3-5 months ago and never given it any thought, but now I looked it up on wikipedia and it's my most anticipated game of the year. Let's just hope that Bethesda doesn't dumb down the game to increase salesZing wrote:I enjoyed watching this, thanks. The number of times the host said "like" was very grating.
