When did that happen? I have never seen anyone, forumnite, developer or member of the press say that games should be only for adults. I sincerely believe you are arguing against a strawman here.
But really, I still don't know what are you opposing. It has been three pages and I still don't know, and I'm confident my reading comprenhension is working correctly. Can you point out, exactly, what you oppose?
What's not to get? Even if I don't necessarily agree, I get what he is saying. Here is my summary:
We the original gamers played games when a lot more of them were cartoony and less violent, and mostly marketed towards kids. Now we are grown up and while we want to still play video games we aren't kids anymore so we want more "mature" content. Now since our age group is the dominate age group in video games a good portion of games are made and marketed with us in mind.
Kids today are mostly seeing mature oriented video games being in the news and advertisements. Kids are being made fun of by other kids for not playing what the adults do, since we all know when being a kid doing something adults do makes us "cool". So they are missing out on all the less mature fun games.
If it's still hard for you to get, take out Nintendo and what do you have left? Do you not hear people, even members here, who refer to Nintendo as making kiddie games? Were Nintendo games called kiddie on the NES? Every system since the NES has been called more and more kiddie with each passing generation even though I personally feel that for the most part Nintendo games are pretty much the same today as they were then. So is it that Nintendo has changed or we have?

Thank you very much, Pepharytheworm, you summed it up perfectly. That is exactly what I am stating and what the topic is about.

Yes. But the question is. Why, if the kid is the one trying to look "cool" by buying adult things be it videogames or sperm-comedies like American Pie, am I responsible for "killing the hobby" for them? Why should art bend down to cater to kids? Fuck kids, they already ruined my other hobby, I'm not going to let them have this one
Now seriously, so what? Should I stop trying to push games as art or to put violence or rape, or dark adult themes in my games? Should I stop demanding games I like? Should developers and publishers cater to kids when the market wants the titles we have now? Really, it seems silly to me.
TL;DR: The game industry is not a babysitter.

So by your logic the success of the Saw franchise should have made Disney switch to horror?
I'm sorry but this to me sounds like another of those lame "gaming was better back in the day" threads.
1) Games for all ages still get made. They just don't get as much press in the gaming world, cause by now the majority of us are older
2) Games are not baby sitters anymore. In the NES days most games were exclusively for kids, and Nintendo was a bitch with censorship cause a bunch of uneducated morons decided that a console is capable of raising their child instead of them, so they demanded that everything be "appropriate" (think of it like the fisher-price version of censorship) so they wouldn't even need to spend 10 minutes raising their children, by checking if their hobbies are appropriate for their age.

The older generation deciding the game market does not ring true to me. There is a larger percentage of adults playing games today, but I think most of the market is the kids and teens.
What is the largest age group that buys games? Take into account that parents buy M games for their kids and teens so that number is slued. The kid and teen is the cash cow not the parent buying a game. Is it the parent as the purchaser or kid and teens that know what type of game they want? It is the parent's call in deciding what is appropriate, but in reality the kid or teen is not influenced by the parent into wanting a certain type of game. The game industry knows this when they push the games into market.

I think the demographic is still the early 20s being the biggest player these days.

Again, I think you misread the intent of this thread. I might be wrong but I think the OP is not calling for a change but just stating his views on the current market compared to older generations and wanting see others views. But you more or less are proving his point. Of course "killing" in the title is subjective because even with more "mature"* games kids are still playing and having fun, just not the same fun. Whether their fun is better or not again is subjective.
*by mature I don't just mean M-rated, but games despite rating with adult concepts

A lot of parents use video games to get their kids out of their hair, even if it isn't age appropriate. This is not true for all families, but it does happen. I know parents who do still use video games to "babysit." When my wife and I go somewhere or do anything, it's usually with the kids. These days, most families have both parents in the workforce due to our terrible economy. It takes both parents to work full time to provide for the family. Parents are either too tired or too busy to spend quality time with the kids, and the kids are preoccupied by video games unintentionally. Sadly, a lot of parents are oblivious to the fact that without quality family time (with or without playing video games) and discipline, their children will suffer from it and become douchbags.
