I can recommend a serious/gritty/adult adventure game: I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
It's a loose adaptation of a short story by Harlan Ellison about five humans trapped inside a giant, hateful, nearly omnipotent computer. What's really striking about the game is how it gives players multiple choices in solving problems (usually involving moral choices) and how the game is aimed squarely at adults looking for something serious.

Pardon? I've mentioned it twice. In two separate posts even...

If you have a Ps3 check out Heavy rain! I played and finished it at my friends house and I really enjoyed it. You may also want to check out the ace attorney or 999 games if those count since they are visual novels.

How is Heavy Rain an adventure game? :|
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

It's not from a point-and-click standpoint, but if you look at the arc of interactive fiction, starting with text adventure games ... I can see a case being made. It doesn't really fit with the OP though, I'll give you that.

I consider Heavy Rain a modern adventure game. Yes its not point and click, but you ARE exploring multiple areas with multiple characters, gathering clues and slowly learning more about the story and the characters. OP said to also list some serious adventure games that focus on the storyline. At least to me, Heavy rain seemed like a good choice but after seeing the responses, I guess not.

It's actually the studios third game. If you have played The Next Big Thing by Pendulo, it is the sequel to a game they made before Runaway called Hollywood Monsters, but HM is a pricey game.

I definitely will play Heavy Rain some day, but it's not what I'm looking for at the moment: traditional 2D point and click adventure games

Really. Interesting. I take it you can't get HM digital like Runaway and The Next Big Thing? Runaway is the first Pendulo game I've played and so far I like it.
