I've been around music my whole life. My dad has a few hundred tapes floating around, mostly late 80s/early 90s and I play a few different instruments, so I was familiar with the really basic classical stuff.

First album I remember buying was Comatose by Skillet. I remember my friends telling me it was the best thing ever! I was 10 or 11 at the time and I really liked it. Now that I look back on it, it's pretty bad, but better than most of my friends' current favorite albums.

The first music I bought for myself was the eponymous A Split Second release on tape because of the song Rigor Mortis. I had copied a bunch of new wave and industrial stuff from a friend a little before that, but that SS tape led to a big obsession with Wax Trax releases. The Wax Trax logo was always big and easy to see on tape spines, so I could just look for that at the store and in that golden late 80s era I was always guaranteed something awesome from the label even if I wasn't familiar with the particular band.

Cowabunga!

The first serious album I bought:

Both were on cassette tape.

Nirvana is a band that I used to love, but now due to it being completely over-played on rock stations and from other people, I could live without ever hearing them again. A band that was ruined for me.

I honestly don't remember what was the first album I bought with my own money (it was sometime in high school that's for sure).

But I do remember the first album I had my parents get for me. I was a wee kid in a record store and I asked my dad to get me this album:

What made it special was that after I got it, my dad used one of those label makers, made a label with my name on it, and put it on the CD cover.

Grateful Dead Live/Dead for 50 cents at a used cassette shop when i was 11. Btw i was 11 in like 2002 so it was pretty strange for an 11 year old to be jaming to the dead on his ballin ass walkman.
